COMMUNITY IN ACTION

The Royal Canadian Air Force Association Wing 424 recently donated $500 to the 325 Cornwall Kiwanis Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. The donation will be put towards the purchase of a dream flyer flight simulator. Pictured is Andy McDonald, commanding officer of the Squadron, and Donnie Ross, president of the Royal Canadian Air Force Wing 424. The Cornwall Kiwanis Royal Canadian Air Cadets is one of the most active cadet units in the Eastern Ontario Region. The Canadian Cadet Organization is a youth group provided through a partnership between the Canadian Department National Defence and the respective Elemental Leagues. This is a youth group for ages 12-18 with a focus on developing youth in the areas of leadership, citizenship, physical fitness as well as an interest in flying for air cadets. The group is sponsored by the Cornwall Kiwanis Club and Wing 424 of the Cornwall Royal Canadian Air Force Association.

Dress Purple winner

$400 for Rachel’s Kids

Tea Kennedy, a 9-year-old fourth grade student at the Williamstown Public school, is the grand prize winner of the iPad Mini, a prize for participating in the Community Dress Purple day with the schools. All schools across SDG participated in the Community Dress Purple day, which took place last month and was organized by the SD & G Children’s Aid Society (CAS). The kids who dressed purple on that day to support Child Abuse Prevention received a ballot to win the iPad Mini. Tea was the successful winner out of thousands of participants. She is pictured above with her prize. CAS works with families who may be facing situations such as poverty, unemployment or family violence. They also help them deal with mental health issues or caring for a child who has serious physical, emotional or developmental difficulties.

Twelve teams, made up of two competitors each, took part in the second annual Sauve Amazing Race. The race itself lasted a total of four hours and took participants from Cornwall to Long Sault, then to Summerstown. Great communication and positive attitudes helped Angela Aubin and Nicholas Longchamps become this year’s champs. Angela and Nicholas’s chosen charity was Rachel’s Kids. A donation in the amount of $400 was therefore given to the Small Moments of Joy program. Rachel’s Kids is a charitable organization supported through community contributions, corporate donations and the time of volunteers, which seeks to aid impoverished, neglected and abused children as well as numerous education initiatives, including awarding scholarships and building schools. Rachel’s Kids also integrates with other aid organizations in order to improve the lives of children in need, both locally and globally.
