New Documentary Shares Twin Cities Community Member’s Story

Showcasing the humanity at the heart of a global event, Anahita: A Mothers Journey shares the courageous story of one of our community members. Twin Cities PBS (TPT) will air the hour-long documentary on TPT 2 on June 25 at 6 p.m. with accompanying afternoon programming focused on refugee and immigrant stories.

There is an encore broadcast at 9 p.m. on TPT Life on June 30, and the film is available for streaming on TPT’s website at tpt.org/anahita . TPT has made the film available as part of our commitment to including community voices and experiences in our storytelling. Anahita is an Afghan refugee who evacuated Kabul in August 2021. The documentary details her displacement from Afghanistan and the beginning of her new life with her family in the Twin Cities. Anahita, an Afghan police officer, fled Kabul with her children after being tipped- off that the Taliban was looking for her. Unable to get to the evacuation site, her husband remains in Afghanistan. The Belltower Pictures film was directed by Martin Montgomery, and produced by David E. Powers and Jawad Wahabzada.

What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members who give $60 or more annually: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to tpt.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to tpt.org or the PBS App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app.

Can I watch TPT Passport shows online? Yes! Head to tpt.org and search for your favorite shows in the search bar. Watch on-demand videos after logging in.

TPT NOW Doubles Health & Safety Info on TV and Stream

“TPT NOW also stands ready to serve government partners as we did during COVID-19 with broadcasts and streams reaching almost two million viewers by broadcasting dozens of real-time press conferences in four languages,” McDonald adds. Through its established hub of community media partners, TPT NOW recently launched a severe weather media campaign supported by dozens of cultural leaders willing to record public service announcements with safety tips about tornados, lightning, warning sirens, and other safety information. Tune in to TPT NOW’s fresh look after its launch in May on Channel 2.5 or tpt.org/tptnowtv .

TPT NOW has doubled down on its efforts to reach more Minnesotans with health and safety information by launching a new design featuring twice as many videos, graphics, radar, and news headlines. Launched in 2015, TPT NOW is one of five broadcast channels operated by Twin Cities PBS, and critical information is shared in English, Hmong, Spanish, and Somali languages “Our work is really about engaging with cultures, non-profit, and government agencies looking for creative ways to help more Minnesotans be prepared and respond to emergencies,” says Lillian McDonald, Senior Managing Director. Surveys of TPT NOW viewers contributed to changes to the automated, 24/7, regional channel reaching one million households in Metro and Central Minnesota. Brighter colors, regional radars, international and travel forecasts, BBC news headlines, local music, and live broadcast views from nature and traffic cameras highlight new and future changes.

How Old Thank-You Cards Helped Me Remember When I Made a Difference By Mary Kay Jordan Fleming

A tattered greeting card fell to the floor as I rummaged through the file cabinet. I opened the card to find a name I barely remembered along with a handwritten message. "Your class changed my life and that of my children." I held the card to my heart. I retired after almost 40 years of teaching developmental psychology. Three years later, I'm still sorting through the remnants of that life I no longer live. There's constant pressure on older folks like me to empty our overstuffed file cabinets and closets: Declutter now to make life easier for those we leave behind. Fair enough. But it's not easy to decide what to keep when a full life generates so much.

For me, those carefully preserved thank-you notes held part of the answer. They revealed a past and a person I'd almost forgotten. Someone whose life was far from extraordinary but counted for something, nonetheless. One former student honored me with a special place in her life story. "Because you lent a sympathetic ear and helped me build confidence, you have become a part of my autobiography. You touch more people than you realize." Most of the messages came from young people still figuring out who they wanted to be, how they wanted to live their lives. A few were in the early stages of building their families and careers. I, on the other hand, have already traversed that territory. My future requires hindsight and foresight in equal measure, making peace with the past as well as finding new purpose.

“Have I made a difference in the world? Could I pass into eternity tomorrow with no regrets?”

The bulging folder labeled Thank-You Notes held messages from past students, former Cub Scouts, robotics team members and attendants from my children's weddings. My careful preservation of these long-yellowed pages would horrify a minimalist. Now in my seventh decade, more of my life lies behind me than ahead. The questions I face at this stage would have been unimaginable to the young people who wrote those cards. Have I made a difference in the world? Could I pass into eternity tomorrow with no regrets?

Beware Allergy Sufferers: The Season Is Longer and More Intense By Craig Miller

Lew Ziska was a freshman in college when he realized he had a bigger problem than he thought with his seasonal allergies. "It was spring. I could not breathe,” recalls the 65-year-old college professor. “Having a 600-pound gorilla sitting on your chest is not a joke. You feel like you're going to die." Ziska now knows the "gorilla" was a severe asthma attack triggered by spring allergies. He's one of the tens of millions of Americans – including one in four adults – who suffer from seasonal allergies. It may seem ironic (or fitting) that he went on to become a plant physiologist at Columbia University, where he now studies the link between climate change and allergies. Unfortunately, however, the news from the research front is not good. A March 2023 report from Princeton-based Climate Central calls the rise in outdoor allergies a "significant threat to human health." The report affirms, "A growing body of research shows that warming temperatures, shifting seasonal patterns and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — all linked to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions — are affecting the length and intensity of allergy season in the U.S." While the news is bad for allergy sufferers "across the board," the climate impacts could pose a greater risk to older adults.
