June 2023 TPT Member Magazine

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA June kicks off the season of summer celebrations and festivals in the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota. TPT will also share and celebrate our community’s experiences and stories through some outstanding programming this month. As part of our celebration of Pride Month, we will broadcast three new documentaries. The American Masters documentary Little Richard: The King and Queen of Rock N’ Roll airs on June 2 on TPT 2 at 8 p.m. Mama Bears , an Independent Lens film, will be broadcast on TPT 2 at 9 p.m. on June 20, telling the story of fundamentalist, evangelical Christians fighting for the rights of their LGBTQ+ children. We round out the month with American Experience: Casa Susanna on June 27 on TPT 2 at 7 p.m. You can find more Pride content on page 9. This month, TPT is also celebrating Juneteenth. I encourage you to explore TPT’s Black history collection at tpt.org/blackhistory and watch This is Minnesota Orchestra’s Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom on TPT 2 on June 23 at 8 p.m. You can find more Juneteenth programming on page 11. I am thrilled that TPT is also sharing the courageous story of one of our own community members. A nahita: A Mother’s Journey tells the story of an Afghan refugee who evacuated Kabul in August 2021 with her five children and began a new life in the Twin Cities. The film will have its Minnesota broadcast premiere at 6 p.m on June 25 on TPT 2. We also continue to share community stories through our digital series. Worn Within season 2 premieres in June on TPT’s YouTube channel and at tpt.org/wornwithin . The new season explores the intersection of culture, fashion, and identity. Our June programming illustrates TPT’s commitment to including community voices and experiences in our storytelling. Your support allows us to do this work. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS
