Plans Pushed for Protestant Radio Station in Europe Plans to build an international European Protestant radio station are being pushed in spite of the re fusal of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches to accord its patronage. The annual assembly of the federation, held in Geneva last June, decided that the project pre sented too many difficulties, partic ularly theological ones. It ruled against sponsoring construction of the station in Switzerland as had been proposed by the Swiss pro moters. Nevertheless, the promo ters, clergymen and laymen, decid ed to undertake the project on their own initiative. One of the sponsors of the project said, “ The Vatican radio broadcasts Roman Catholic thought every day in 28 languages and radio stations in Arab countries broadcast daily Moslem religious programs over many wavelengths.” The sponsor, Albert Moeckli, admitting that the problems for Protestantism were greater because they were not close ly identified with the government, as was the case with religion in most Catholic and Moslem countries, add ed: “But will Protestantism capitu late in advance in face of difficulties so long as they have not proved in surmountable? We do not think so.” The proposed station will be of medium-power construct ion and will have a range of 1,865 miles and will be heard throughout Eu rope, including Western Russia, the Near East and North Africa. This region of the world contains about 555,000,000 inhabi tants and 70,- 000,000 radio sets, not including those in the Soviet Union and its satellite countries. Moeckli said, “The international Protestant radio station desires to spread the evan gelical doctrine by appropriate pro grams.” World Parley of Faiths ask for Peace Asserting that diplomats “have not advanced the cause of peace,” The King's Business/June 1958

the president of the New York Board of Rabbis said recently that “ the world’s religious leaders should get together to deal with the world sit uation.” The Rev. Joseph Miller, Board President, said: “ It is my firm conviction that the time has come for all dedicated religious lead ers of whatever faith to take matters into their own hands and lead in clearing the air and purifying the temple of life if they do not desire to see it destroyed altogether.” He said, “ I suggest the calling of a world convocat i on of religions, whence would come forth the an cient but ever new challenge first uttered by the priest Mattathias, the father of the Maccabees: ‘He who is for the Lord, let him join me.’ The world’s political leaders have failed and so have the leaders of science and industry.” Boy held as Gunsmith A 16-year-old boy was recently arraigned in a Bronx, New York Magistrates Court on a charge of having “made a zip gun in school.” The boy, an eighth-grade pupil, was arrested at school. Police said a teacher had found him using an electric shop drill to fashion the single-shot weapon. A New Weather Brain The 'Army recently announced the development of an “ electronic weatherman.” The system spots high-altitude indi cati ons of ap proaching storms, hurricanes, tor nadoes and other bad weather faster and more accurately than any pre vious device. The new system developed at the Army signal engineering laborator ies reduces long, difficult calcula tions now required to interpret data from a weather balloon flight. It tracks the balloon and a built-in electronic “ brain” does the figuring instantly. The specially designed computers of the system work in conj unc t i on with a three-pound weather station known as a Radio sonde, which is carried aloft by a
