The tiny airborne device sends back coded radio sig nals, which are fed into the “ brain.” They are processed and stamped out on paper as usable humidity, tem perature and pressure readings. A second high-speed computer calcu lates winds faster than has been pos sible before. The weather “wizard” can track a balloon to an altitude of 24 miles or higher with its radar like antenna, which follows on the balloon’s radio signal automatically. It tracks the balloon precisely even if it drifts 200 miles from the launching site, or twice the effective range of previous equipment. Sloppy Attire Taboo Teen-agers at Antioch Township High School, Antioch, 111. rate an “ A” in proper dressing. A quietly effective campaign by school authorities at the northern Illinois lake resort school enlisted the aid of parents to get their chil dren to avoid the “ sloppy dress” characteristic of many of the na tion’s teen-age pupils. Letters sent to the students’ homes forbade the “Elvis” type of haircut, motorcycle boots and jack ets for boys; also extreme hairdos, blue jeans, levis and toreador pants for the girls. School authorities firmly believe that sloppy dress is closely related to sloppy school work and slovenly thinking. The students have cooper ated fully with the school. Snow Crystals Scientists have created miniature snow storms in their laboratories to unravel the mysteries of one of nature’s greatest beauties. No one has eve r f o un d two crystals of snow exactly alike, al though thousands have been pho tographed. The six-sided crystals, as delicate as the finest lace, are copied by designers seeking exqui site patterns for dresses, china and other objects. According to Dr. Ukichiro Naka- ya and his colleagues at Hokkaido Unir., Japan, snow forms through the condensation of water vapor on tiny particles of matter, such as dust, in the atmosphere. Each par ticle is only about 1/20,000th of an inch in diameter — so small that it can be studied only with an elec tron microscope. END.
