big baseball stars. With me it’s dif ferent. I want to see Jim O’Grady, the big evangelist. He’s been all over the world and people fill up football stadiums to see him. It’s something that he’s going to stop in a town as small as Wailing Waters. It’s a wonder he doesn’t go right on to Kansas City. That’s where the crowd is, ain’t it?” Joey knew that the strange gen tleness which sometimes showed through the hardness was Bill’s real self. It was the self that Bill wanted to be but wouldn’t because he was afraid of getting hurt. Joey’s toe found a board that was loose and he worked it back and forth; the little squeaking sounds synchronized with the call ing of a mourning dove in the dis tance. “ Oh, stop that! Go get the mail or something!” Bill said. “ I’ll think about t ak i ng y o u to W a i l i n g Waters. Bemember, I said just think. Anyway, it’ll probably rain again and flood out the road.” Outside the growl of thunder and the darkening sky made Joey think for a minute that nature was on Bill’s side. He felt even more that way when he got to the mailbox and found the letter wasn’t there. The box was on a knoll just across the bridge and high enough to miss the floods. The little bridge had al ways resisted the floods but Bill said it would go out some time. Walking back toward the old summer house, Joey thought of the letter he’d written just two days after his arrival and the talk with Bill that had brought it about. “Your dad used to be a regular gospel Joe like you are — and be lieve it or not I used to be that way too.” It was night and they were sitting on the porch. Bill was smok ing one cigarette after another to “ keep ,the mosquitoes away.” The red eye of his cigarette waxed and waned like the fireflies which were as thick as the mosquitoes.
