but enough so that it wouldn’t be safe to drive across. Uncle Bill’s face was triumphant but there was a strange sadness there, too, it seemed. Joey wasn’t seeing very well. Everything had a veil of rain over it. “ It rained hard up north,” Bill said, “ that’s what happened. There isn’t anything to do but turn back. Don’t worry, the guy probably won’t come anyway.” The clouds cleared and the sun came out but Joey could hear the river roaring. Through the trees Joey noted that the jet trails were back in the sky again and they were like bright promises which had suddenly turned false. Why had God done this when at first it had all seemed like a miracle — why, when it had been so impor tant, had it turned out this way? He noted that he was making the loose porch board squeak again but Uncle Bill didn’t even seem to care. It was as if someone as young as Joey were looking out of Bill’s eyes. “Dudley Pendleton . . . Dudley Pendleton. . . .’’ Joey said the name over and over to himself. The charm was still there but paled a little — like the lovely sound of Caribbean Sea when you said it too many times. A few days ago he’d thought he might become a missionary in the Caribbean area. After awhile Bill went into the house and turned on the radio. A news cast was on and it blared on the rain-washed air until it seemed to fill the whole forest. “ The evangelist, Jim O’Grady, cancelled a whistle stop in Wailing Waters, Mo. today, because of a flood. Jim’s special train left the main line and traveled a flood- threatened track to get to Wailing Waters. A spokesman said that since thousands were awaiting Jim in Kansas City he couldn’t very well risk not getting there by mak ing a stop at Wailing Waters, popu lation 5 00.” The afternoon dragged itself away like a dog with a broken leg and the shadows grew heavy in the woods. Through the foliage Joey noted the yellow wash of sun on Razor Back Ridge. Evening vesper time came. Could he look out over the town and the treacherous river and see the mir acle now? It looked like Uncle Bill
