King's Business - 1911-03

City, 2,100 in Omaha, 1,000 in Atlanta, 1,500 in Minneapolis, 2,100 in Denver,* 1,000 in Memphis, 1,500 in Toledo, i and other leading commercial cities are also preparing to place Bibles in their hotels. Mr. Henderson is trying to interest the Laymen's Evangelistic Council of Chicago and the Christian business men of t h at city, in his plans to place 6,000 Bibles in Chicago hotels. The LaSalle and other leading hotels there have consented to th«i placing of Bibles in their guest rooms. The American Bible Society is furnishing a special edition of the Bible for. this pur- pose at less than cost. In this way the Gideons are able to place a splendid large clear-type Bible in the guest room of a hotel for thirty-two cents. On the inside of the f r o nt cover of these Bibles is a printed slip telling where to find the most» comforting and helpful passages of Scrip- ture for different circumstances and con- ditions. When Mr. Henderson was in Omaha a leading ma n u f a c t u r er told him t h at one, of his best salesmen had been exceedingly worldly. A short time ago he telephoned from his hotel t h at he was sick and would like to have someone call and see him. One of the traveling salesmen went to see him, and on his return told the president of the company t h at he found the sick, man lying on his bed reading a Bible, and he asked him how this came about. He said, "Some months ago, I was at Fo rt Dodge, la., and discovered a Gideon Bible on my dresser. I t was the first Bible I had noticed since I was a boy. I opened it and began to read, and found a number of chapters t h at my mother used to read to me, and became deeply interested. At, Cedar Rapids I found another Bible in my room, and at Waterloo I found another. I bought a Bible of my own, and I have been carrying it in my grip and reading it ever since." In a church in Kansas City a lady testi- fied t h at her two brothers had been con- verted through reading Gideon Bibles in the hotels. Partly as a result of her test-, imony, a freewill offering of $45 was made for the Gideon Bible fund. Not long ago Mr. Henderson met an actor on the train who said, " I believe the Gideons a most practical and needed Christian work. Almost everywhere I go, especially in the West and Northwest, I find a Bible in my bedroom at the hotel, and it makes the hotel seem like a home and the land- lord like a b r o t h e r ." Anyone desiring to know; more about this work can do so by addressing Mr. W. E. Henderson, Secretary, The Gideons, 17 Quincy Street, Chicago.—Christian Her- ald.

he opens business every morning with a service of prayer. In another meeting an old gentlenjan 72 years of age found'the Lord. The services were largely attended and resulted in the saving of large numbers. ANSWERED PRAYER. There have been some remarkable an- swers to the prayers of the students and workers during the past month. One all- night prayer brought a soul to the feet of the Lord. The annual meeting of the Board of Directors was held in February, resulting in the re-election of the old officers. The work of the Institute is upon a broader and better basis than ever before and the prospects for the future are as bright as tne precious promise of the Lord. A very interesting feature of our work is that which grows out of the Lyceum Club. These hundreds of young women naturally come to their leader for com- fort, guidance and protection. Many of them are alone in the world, as f ar as family life is concerned; many others are beset on all "sides by false doctrines and need help to see right lines; they one and all need the good fellowship they find around the supper table before their week- ly Bible class. The years in this work show rich fruitage for the Master and the girls look forward to each Tuesday night as a very bright, happy spot in their week. The room is getting almost inadequate and we look forward with gr^at longing and earnest prayer for larger quarters of our own. — ' Bibles in Hotels. D UR ING the past year a g r e at Gospel work has been carried on quietly but energetically by Mr. W. E. Henderson, the new Secretary of the Gideons. Never have so many Bibles been placed in hotels in so short a time. At their last meeting, the British Commercial Traveling Men's Christian Association rejoiced over the f a c t t h at they had placed over 500 Bibles in British hotels during the year. They were astounded to learn t h at during the past twelve months the Gideons of America had placed over 50,000 Bibles in American hotels. Mr. Henderson has traveled from city to city, speaking in churches and in halls, and many business men have become in- terested. He has placed or arranged to place Bibles in the guest rooms of hotels in thirteen leading American cities; 1,279 Bibles are allotted to the guest rooms of hotels in St. Paul; 1,000 in St. Joseph; 1,000 in Birmingham, Ala.; 1,500 in De- troit, 1,000 in Duluth, 2,000 in Kansas
