There are 1,600,000,000 persons on the earth today. Nearly 1,000,000,000 have yet to hear the gospel. There are 42,000,000 unevangelized in Japan. Chinese Turkestan is practically without a missionary. Tibet is virgin soil. China constitutes a tremen dous challenge. Groups o f believers cap be found in only a few villages and cities. Millions in A frica remain in ignorance o f the gospel. In some regions o f the Dark Continent, the nearest missionary is 1,500 miles away. There are 14,000,000 human beings in South America who have never been visited by a missionary, Roman Cath olic or Protestant. As long as there are per sons living and dying without God or hope, the note o f urgency must be sounded. —W atchman -E xaminer . IV. M issions , a S piritual E nterprise The missionary enterprise is primarily and essentially and finally spiritual....No study of missions in any aspect is adequate, which does not definitely confront the stu dent with the truth that this is a spiritual work, and that it can be wrought only by spiritual means. Only the divine power o f the omnipotent Jehovah is equal to bringing this mission ary service to a successful issue...None but the self-emptied and Spirit-filled man is equal to the task. I tell you, a man can’t stand the pressure in a heathen iand, even if he is a mission ary, unless he gives close and constant at tention to the cultivation o f his own inner spiritual life. It is impossible for unaided man to change the heathen heart into a Christian heart. Only a divine. Christ can break the heathen heart into contrition and conver sion.—E llis . and where instruction in music, art crafts, and the trade is given. Herzliah School numbers 800 students, and its graduates are admitted to the colleges o f America and Europe. Tel Aviv is the cultural center for He brew in Palestine, and a number o f Jewish publishing houses are located there. E x hibitions of books and paintings are held frequently. Daily and weekly 'newspa pers and monthly magazines on agricul ture, literature, and industry are published in Hebrew. Tel Aviv has a reputation as a summer resort for Palestine, and its long sandy beach bordering on the Mediterranean at tracts thousands o f visitors, f Everything in Tel Aviv, including its houses, streets, public buildings, schools and factories, was built by Jews. Tel Aviv is the only all-Jewish city in the world, and it is one of the most important cities o f the Near East—the wonder city o f Pal estine. Palestine today offers unexampled op portunities for Jewish missionary service, and in the course o f time, we trust that some o f the students o f the Jewish Mis sionary Training Course o f the Bible In stitute will be led o f the Lord to turn their faces toward that ancient promised land and there, amid the familiar surroundings o f the land o f our Saviour’s birth and min istry, seek to evangelize some o f the in coming thousands o f our Lord’s brethren according to the flesh.
