is mentioned. Here they “ taught many” (20, 21) and doubtless achieved some notable victories. Note next the work of confirmation, to which Paul and Barnabas gave them selves. They did not make converts and then go off and forget the follow-up work. They did not undertake on this first journey more than they could ade quately care for. They took time to teach their converts how to live the Christian life. Moreover, they saw to it that each congregation had proper leadership (23). Memory Verse: “When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord” (Acts 13:48). As the church at Antioch grew under the preaching of Barnabas and Saul, God raised up many prophets and teach ers from among these new Christians. As some of the church leaders were fast ing and praying, the Holy Spirit said: “ Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” God was not satisfied for His children to be receiving the Word all of the time just for themselves. He wanted them to be telling others about the Saviour; He wanted them to send forth some of their members as missionaries. Both the church at Antioch and the Holy Spirit sent forth the two missionaries, Saul and Barnabas. The Holy Spirit directed them to the cities where He had prepared the hearts of the people to receive the gos pel message. In some towns they were allowed to preach in the synagogue of the Jews. In one town, after the Jews had left the synagogue, the Gentiles asked that the same gospel message be preached to them the next Sabbath. After the synagogue service, many of the people followed Barnabas and Saul who urged them to “continue in the grace of God.” How anxious the church at Antioch must have been to hear about what God was doing with their first missionaries! How they must have prayed for the safety, the health, and the spiritual life of these from their group who were carrying the gospel to new lands! Does your church have any gospel teams, jail or hospital workers, mission workers, or missionaries from its mem bership? Have you ever asked if there is any need of food, clothing, singing, calling, etc., that you might do to help in any of these services in your Lord’s name? Perhaps you cannot help in any of these ways, but you may be able to help with your money, and all may always help with their prayers. Many missionaries who have been in need or in danger have later learned that a friend at home was praying at that very hour for them. If you are faithful now in giving and in praying, the Holy Spirit may some day choose you to go as God’s messenger to bring the story of salvation to those in other lands.
