This week our Year 12 students have enjoyed an enrichment week following their recent school exams. The focus of the week has been thinking about future pathways with students having the opportunity to learn more about university applications, including specialist pathways such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge, as well as alternative apprenticeship routes. The week included a trip to

St Mary’s University and ended with a well deserved trip to Thorpe Park. Our Year 9 students have really enjoyed their DofE training sessions preparing them for their upcoming expeditions. Any families planning camping trips over the summer will be delighted to hear that they have now acquired expertise in map reading, putting up tents as well as camp stove cuisine! The PTA are organising another Preloved Uniform Sale on Saturday 17 June. We would very much welcome donations of any unwanted uniform that is clean and in a good condition. The sales are a great way to support Waldegrave families to manage the cost of school uniform as well as raising vital funds for the school. As you will appreciate, there is real pressure on school funds as well as households due to inflationary costs. You can also support the school through our Waldegrave PTA KindLink. Just a reminder that this morning we shared an important safety message from the Richmond Schools’ Police Team about personal safety and the risks associated with gatherings at Teddington Lock. As the weather improves we know that everyone in our community wants to make the most of our idyllic local environment and we need to work together so that everyone can do this safely.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is Anxiety. The Mental Health Foundation has created the booklets that are attached to this message to support schools and families in responding to anxiety. This video has a useful explanation of what anxiety feels like and some simple strategies to help manage it and help young people build resilience. If you are interested in finding out more about how you, as a parent, can help your child build their resilience, you might wish to join a parent course we are planning. Please contact info@waldegravesch.org and use ‘Supporting Resilience course for parents’ as the subject of your email. Relationships and sex education Students in Key Stage 3 will be studying Relationships and Sex Education in their PDC lessons over the next half term. The lessons for part of a carefully planned, age appropriate, spiral curriculum and use PSHE Association Quality Assured resources. If you would like further information, please contact Ms Moore, via info@waldegravesch.org

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

It has been a rather busy week for our Year 12 students as they spent the last five days off timetable participating in a number of Enrichment activities. On Monday, Mr Bannister delivered a Personal Statement Briefing explaining to the students how to structure their UCAS personal statement as well as launching the EPQ. The day concluded with a Medical Careers’ Insight event, which was an optional session for those students who are interested in pursuing medical careers, such as Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Medicine or other related fields. Students that attended this talk were lucky enough to hear from some professionals acting as guest speakers for each area. On Tuesday, the students were briefed on how to register for UCAS followed by a session for students thinking of applying to either Oxford or Cambridge by the Outreach Officer at Oriel College, Oxford. On Wednesday, we took the whole Year group to St Mary’s University. Students experienced first hand what University life is like, on a campus tour and university staff delivered a variety of academic sessions to them, which will match as closely as possible to what the students want to read at University, if this is their chosen post-18 pathway. In addition to the above events, a number of Year 12 students visited Guildhall to attend the Tacitus Lecture hosted by the Worshipful Company of World Traders. Students heard from former MP Rory Stewart who discussed Populism, Poverty and Hope in the 21st Century and had the opportunity to meet historian David Olusoga. On Thursday, students heard about different types of apprenticeships they could apply for post-18. For those interested in such pathways, there was an opportunity to attend a further two focus sessions hosted by two different providers. To end the week, Year 12 were treated to a day of fun and thrills as they visited Thorpe park. Many Year 12 Music students are currently on a four day residential trip to France. The students left yesterday and are due to return on Sunday. We look forward to hearing how they got on. Next week Textile students will complete their mocks over the course of the week. Also, a number of talks have been organised. On Tuesday after school, we will be delighted to welcome Dr Arnaurd Chevallier from Royal Holloway, who will be speaking about what is Economics in the world. Furthermore, on Wednesday after school, we will be delighted to welcome Professor Blagrove, who will discuss the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming, including Theories and Experimental Evidence in the Psychology of Dreaming. Additionally, on Thursday after school, Drama Students will take part in the Component 1 Exam. We are really looking forward to seeing them perform. On the same day, Art students will have the day off to prepare for the Art Mock exam.

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

BOOK OF THE MONTH

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway For Whom the Bell Tolls follows Robert Jordan, an American soldier who goes abroad to fight on the side of freedom in a war with no true heroes. Deployed to blow up a bridge in the Spanish Sierra, Jordan begins to question whether he is fighting for the right people, or if such people even exist. Despite the heavy subject matter, a simple and laconic writing style allows for the reader to move swiftly along without much interruption for long and gratuitous descriptions or introspection. In a sentence or two, a picture is painted of the Spanish countryside, and the men who fight for its freedom, and its destruction. With a low barrier for entry, and so much to gain, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a worthwhile read for anyone. ~Recommended by Zach R, Year 12 student Please contact us with any queries or problems you may have.
