A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

HOLIDAYS & NATIONAL DAYS National Walking Month - May Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month - 15 May - 15 June World IBD Day - 19 May National Epilepsy Week - 24-30 May Year 8 Parents’ Consultation Meeting - 4.00 - 6.30pm 24 May Half Term - 29 May - 2 June Year 13 Leavers Assembly - 26 June

This week our Year 12 students have enjoyed an enrichment week following their recent school exams. The focus of the week has been thinking about future pathways with students having the opportunity to learn more about university applications, including specialist pathways such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge, as well as alternative apprenticeship routes. The week included a trip to

St Mary’s University and ended with a well deserved trip to Thorpe Park. Our Year 9 students have really enjoyed their DofE training sessions preparing them for their upcoming expeditions. Any families planning camping trips over the summer will be delighted to hear that they have now acquired expertise in map reading, putting up tents as well as camp stove cuisine! The PTA are organising another Preloved Uniform Sale on Saturday 17 June. We would very much welcome donations of any unwanted uniform that is clean and in a good condition. The sales are a great way to support Waldegrave families to manage the cost of school uniform as well as raising vital funds for the school. As you will appreciate, there is real pressure on school funds as well as households due to inflationary costs. You can also support the school through our Waldegrave PTA KindLink. Just a reminder that this morning we shared an important safety message from the Richmond Schools’ Police Team about personal safety and the risks associated with gatherings at Teddington Lock. As the weather improves we know that everyone in our community wants to make the most of our idyllic local environment and we need to work together so that everyone can do this safely.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is Anxiety. The Mental Health Foundation has created the booklets that are attached to this message to support schools and families in responding to anxiety. This video has a useful explanation of what anxiety feels like and some simple strategies to help manage it and help young people build resilience. If you are interested in finding out more about how you, as a parent, can help your child build their resilience, you might wish to join a parent course we are planning. Please contact info@waldegravesch.org and use ‘Supporting Resilience course for parents’ as the subject of your email. Relationships and sex education Students in Key Stage 3 will be studying Relationships and Sex Education in their PDC lessons over the next half term. The lessons for part of a carefully planned, age appropriate, spiral curriculum and use PSHE Association Quality Assured resources. If you would like further information, please contact Ms Moore, via info@waldegravesch.org

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week we welcomed into school our Duke of Edinburgh scheme leaders who ran training sessions over two days for all of our Bronze DofE students (almost the entire year group!). Students got an introduction to map work and started route planning for their practice expedition which starts on 9 June. They also went through their kit, pitched tents and had a session on what to bring and how to pack their bags most efficiently. They also had a go at lighting their stoves, cooking with them and discussing appropriate food and nutrition for their expeditions. All the students worked brilliantly in their teams as they prepared to face the many challenges ahead of them, both physical and character-building, and I look forward to being a part of it. Our top three students with the most epraise points this week are Lacey, Camilla and Emily all in 9PBE however the top tutor group is 9SHO. Keep up the good work! Congratulations to Lacey M, Camilla C, Jemima R and Emily H who all represented Waldegrave and Team Richmond in the London Youth Games Para Games Gala on Wednesday. Team Richmond finished in 3rd place! All 4 students per - formed amazingly: Lacey won a Gold medal in the 25m freestyle and a Bronze medal in the backstroke relay; Camilla won a Silver medal in the freestyle relay and a Bronze medal in the backstroke relay; and Jemima and Emily both won Bronze medals in the 25m freestyle! We have an economics session coming up next week with Professor Dan Anderberg who is HoD for Economics at Royal Holloway. He will be speaking to all Year 8 and 9 students about the broad nature of Economics and how this fits a range of different subjects (e.g. Psychology & Geography). It will be a great introduction to the subject and how varied it is.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly “The betrayal flayed my skin, but his cowardice chips the bone. It poisons the marrow.”

Laura thought herself the hero when she saved a young woman from a brutal attack. This would go on to change her life in ways that no one could have predicted. Now she and her boyfriend Kit live constantly in fear, tiptoeing around society, trying to remain as invisible and off the radar as possible. However Laura knows that something is hidden, she is never quite seeing the whole picture of the story. This gripping thriller leads to crazy character developments and

horrifying revelations up till the very last page. ~Recommended by Miranda H, Year 9 student

Bronze DofE Training Day

175 Year 9 students completed their training days for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award across Tuesday and Wednesday. They spent the day learning new skills: how to read maps and planning their routes, followed by expert guidance on how to put up tents, cooking on trangia stoves, basic first aid, and advice on what to pack and eat. The external instructors from Aim High were very impressed with the students’ positive attitude and quality of route planning. We are looking forward to seeing the skills put into practice on their Expeditions in June.
