Quick Reference to ASA EPDS and Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDS): EPD ’ s are the most accurate and effecti v e tool a v ailable for comparing genetic le v els . In using EPD , the difference bet w een t w o sires ’ EPD represents the unit difference e x pected in the performance of their progen y . For e x ample , if sires A and B ha v e EPD of + 10 and – 5 , a 15 - unit difference w ould be e x pected in their progen y ( mo v ing from - 5 to + 10 y ields 15 units ). Ke y to using EPD is kno w ing w hat units the y are e x pressed in . For e x ample , if the abo v e case referred to w eaning w eight EPD , A w ould be e x pected to sire 15 - pounds more w eaning w eight than B . If cal v ing ease w ere the trait , A w ould be e x pected to sire 15 - percent more unassisted births in first - calf heifers ; in other w ords , if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers , w e ’ d e x pect A to require 15 assists . A percentile - ranking chart is required to determine w here a bull ’ s EPD rank him relati v e to other bulls in the breed . For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD ’ S and inde x es v isit www . simmental . org . EPD’s are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPD, the difference between two sires’ EPD represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPD of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPD is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPD, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15- percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPD rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD’S and indexes visit www.simmental.org.

$ Indexes Though EPDs allo w comparison of genetic le v els for man y economicall y important traits , the y represent onl y part of the economic picture . That ’ s w here $ inde x es come in — combining EPDs and economics through rigorous calculation to estimate an animal ’ s o v erall impact on y our bottom line . All-Purpose Index (API) E v aluates sires for use across the entire co w herd ( bred to both first - calf heifers and mature co w s ), w ith enough daughters retained to maintain herd si z e and the remaining heifers and steers fed and sold on grade and y ield . Terminal Index (TI) Evaluates sires for use across the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows), with enough daughters retained to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers fed and sold on grade and yield. E v aluates sire for use on mature Angus co w s w ith all offspring put on feed and sold grade and y ield . Using API and TI First determine w hich inde x to use — API if y ou are keeping replacements , TI if not . As w ith EPDs , focus on the dollar difference bet w een bulls ( inde x units are dollars per co w e x posed ). This difference helps determine ho w much more one bull is w orth than another . For e x ample , an all - purpose sire scoring + 100 API is w orth about $ 6 , 000 more than a + 50 bull if both are e x posed to 30 co w s o v er four y ears ($ 50 × 30 × 4 = $ 6 , 000 ). A percentile chart is needed to see ho w a bull ’ s inde x ranks w ithin the breed . For percentile rankings or more detailed information on EPDs and $ inde x es , v isit www . simmental . org . First determine which index to use — API if you are keeping replacements, TI if not. As with EPDs, focus on the dollar difference between bulls (index units are dollars per cow exposed). This difference helps determine how much more one bull is worth than another. For example, an all- purpose sire scoring +100 API is worth about $6,000 more than a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over four years ($50 × 30 × 4 = $6,000). A percentile chart is needed to see how a bull’s index ranks within the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information on EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Though EPDs allow comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they represent only part of the economic picture. A good Gentle Ben son here with calving ease and maternal potential.
A herd bull has one of the greatest economic influences on a cow-calf operation. Unlike many management decisions that impact only a single season, a bull’s genetics affect every calf crop he sires and can influence a herd for years through retained daughters. A typical bull may breed 25–30 cows each year, producing well over 100 calves during his lifetime. Improvements in traits such as growth, calving ease, maternal ability, and carcass merit can add significant value across multiple calf crops. Because of this long-term impact, investing in a genetically superior bull is one of the most powerful ways to improve herd productivity and profitability.

Applebee is a gentle, nice-profiling heifer offering tremendous growth numbers and a top 10% TI rating. Her solid black heifer calf at side by Money Maker looks to be pretty special. To be upfront, she did have larger front teats when she first calved.
