This week our Year 12 students have enjoyed an enrichment week following their recent school exams. The focus of the week has been thinking about future pathways with students having the opportunity to learn more about university applications, including specialist pathways such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge, as well as alternative apprenticeship routes. The week included a trip to

St Mary’s University and ended with a well deserved trip to Thorpe Park. Our Year 9 students have really enjoyed their DofE training sessions preparing them for their upcoming expeditions. Any families planning camping trips over the summer will be delighted to hear that they have now acquired expertise in map reading, putting up tents as well as camp stove cuisine! The PTA are organising another Preloved Uniform Sale on Saturday 17 June. We would very much welcome donations of any unwanted uniform that is clean and in a good condition. The sales are a great way to support Waldegrave families to manage the cost of school uniform as well as raising vital funds for the school. As you will appreciate, there is real pressure on school funds as well as households due to inflationary costs. You can also support the school through our Waldegrave PTA KindLink. Just a reminder that this morning we shared an important safety message from the Richmond Schools’ Police Team about personal safety and the risks associated with gatherings at Teddington Lock. As the weather improves we know that everyone in our community wants to make the most of our idyllic local environment and we need to work together so that everyone can do this safely.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is Anxiety. The Mental Health Foundation has created the booklets that are attached to this message to support schools and families in responding to anxiety. This video has a useful explanation of what anxiety feels like and some simple strategies to help manage it and help young people build resilience. If you are interested in finding out more about how you, as a parent, can help your child build their resilience, you might wish to join a parent course we are planning. Please contact info@waldegravesch.org and use ‘Supporting Resilience course for parents’ as the subject of your email. Relationships and sex education Students in Key Stage 3 will be studying Relationships and Sex Education in their PDC lessons over the next half term. The lessons for part of a carefully planned, age appropriate, spiral curriculum and use PSHE Association Quality Assured resources. If you would like further information, please contact Ms Moore, via info@waldegravesch.org

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
I would like to start with a big thank you to all students and parents who have contributed to our Lepra fundraising programme. Next week is our last week of fundraising and so it would be great if you could encourage your child to perhaps do a sponsored event at home. We also have a Lepra zumba dance class scheduled in the calendar for Year 7 to participate in which will take place in June. Envelopes will be issued to students that wish to make a contribution next week and parents/carers can contribute to our Justgiving webpage. Any contribution is much appreciated. The forms leading the way in the house point stakes this week are 7PWA, 7POR and 7FAD. Well done to students in those form groups, keep up the good work. It has been great to hear that students are enjoying getting involved in our extra-curricular clubs. Students who have been attending the Year 7 Book Club have recently produced some lovely poems in response to novels they have been reading. A couple of these poems have been submitted to share with you all and can be viewed on the next page of this bulletin or by clicking on the following links: ‘A Sister’s Courage’ by Florence P , ‘Anne’ by Anna D. Congratulations to Nell H-G and Penelope S-B who both represented Waldegrave and Team Richmond in the London Youth Games Para Games Gala on Wednesday. Team Richmond finished in 3rd place with Nell winning a Silver medal in the 25m backstroke and Penelope winning a Silver medal in the freestyle relay! I would like to remind parents that many social media platforms have minimum age restrictions that are beyond Year 7 age. WhatsApp has a minimum age requirement of 16+ and platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram have a minimum age of 13+. Experience has shown me that Year 7 students do not always have the awareness to use social media appropriately and it is easy for them to become involved in cyberbullying. As such, I strongly recommend that you discuss this with your child and remove them from any social media groups they might be a part of. The NSPCC have an excellent webpage on helping children stay safe on social media which you can view here. Please can I remind parents/carers to help us maintain high standards of uniform in Year 7. Jewellery and bracelets/ friendship bands are not allowed and socks should be plain white or plain black and free of logos. Many thanks for your support with this.
