GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

OPP in the Pembroke area collected some counterfeit currency during the Christmas holiday season. All business owners in East- ern Ontario are warned to take care when dealing with cash payments involving large amounts of money. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detach- ment has an ongoing investigation under way after OPP officers in the Pembroke area of Laurentian Valley Township collected a number of counterfeit $20 and $100 Cana- dian bank notes. Police found the phony money on five separate occasions during the period be- tween Dec. 16 and Dec. 26. The money was collected on the site of a business and in the parking lot. An OPP incident brief noted that these particular counterfeit bills all featured “dis- tinctive blue and/or pink Chinese writing on them.” At present the detachment has received no reports of anyone passing or trying to pass off counterfeit currency in the area. All business owners in the Laurentian Valley Township area and other parts of East- ern Ontario are warned to be careful when dealing with cash payments involving large amounts of money, and to make sure their staff are aware of this particular example of counterfeit currency.
