SERVICE

WITH ITS HIGH-QUALITY SERVICE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR TO THE LONGEVITY OF THE BUSINESS, TRAINING IS A PRIORITY FOR JOHN SHILLIDAY, AS IS SUPPORTING CASTLEWELLAN COMMUNITY INITIATIVES… A focus on family and community

As John Shilliday Ltd celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Castlewellan builders’ merchant and hardware store remains a family business. The grandson of his namesake founder, John Shilliday has been managing director since 1986 and brings almost 40 years’ background in the trade to the buoyant business. Having started out in the yard, John now brings his vast experience to management of the shop and yard, with responsibility for day-to-day operations including buying, quotes and general queries. John’s wife, Pamela Shilliday, joined the business in 1997 and serves as financial director, with responsibility for accounts and HR.

Aaron Shilliday, John and Pamela’s son, joined in 2020 and is a yard sales assistant, organising deliveries, stock ordering and preparation, and dealing with customers. Also working as a yard sales assistant for the buoyant business, Malcolm McClurg deals with customers, picking orders, off- loading incoming stock and loading lorries. Shop staff, meanwhile, include sales assistants Keith Busby and Mark Russell, who both serve customers and handle goods inward, stock ordering and replenishment, and helping customers with queries. And Ruth Mitchell serves as an office clerk, handling general office duties including reception and administration.

With its high-quality service a significant contributor to the longevity of the business, training is a focus. Yard training ranges from induction to forklift, manual handling and health and safety training, alongside general on-the-job support. Shop staff also receive induction, product, manual handling and health and safety training. Well-established in Castlewellan with its heritage dating back a century, John Shilliday Ltd is also a keen supporter of the local community. The business supports local football clubs, golf events, schools and community groups, as well as charity initiatives such as Men’s Sheds, Ark Community Gardens and Castlewellan Castle.
