Western Building Systems was appointed to design, manufacture and deliver a complete timber frame solution for new modular special educational needs (SEN) accommodation at Glenveagh School. Located at Harberton Park in Belfast, the school offers a safe and secure environment for pupils aged 8-19 with severe learning difficulties. Representing a significant investment in inclusive, high-quality education, the project was delivered on behalf of the Education Authority. It involved the demolition of an existing two-classroom modular building and construction of a new four-classroom SEN school with dedicated domiciliary accommodation and enhanced external play spaces. Western Building Systems’ scope encompassed the full end-to-end process, including off-site design and fabrication, coordinated delivery and the complete on-site erection of the timber frame
superstructure, with all works completed in full both internally and externally. Alongside the four generously-sized classrooms, the new facility comprises specialist resource spaces, hygiene and changing facilities, staff accommodation and circulation areas. Every element of the building was carefully planned and executed to meet the specific spatial, acoustic and accessibility requirements of a SEN learning environment, while integrating seamlessly with the existing school campus. Overcoming challenges The project was delivered within a live school setting, shared with neighbouring schools and residential properties, which required careful planning and execution. Restricted access, proximity to existing services and the need to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle routes presented logistical challenges throughout the works. In addition, the site’s location adjacent to a watercourse required close coordination
