I n my role as policy lead here at the CIPP, it’s mine and my team’s job to proactively promote and elevate the payroll, pension and reward professions. The policy and research team travel up and down the country presenting to a vast number of payroll professionals, all of whom are totally invested in their career. However, as with many other professions, there's a struggle to attract new talent. In April 2023, I hosted a roundtable event with leaders in the industry to discuss: l whether payroll needs a rebrand l how we can collaboratively elevate our profession. Please continue reading to hear our thoughts on how we, collectively, can get the name of payroll out there. Stick or twist… Does payroll need a rebrand? This question sparked lots of conversation around the table. Payroll professionals are totally passionate about our industry, who would have thought it?! We don’t need to convince ourselves that payroll should be appreciated more and recognised by others, it’s the others who need convincing. Payroll itself has remained largely the same. After all, payroll (or wages), has been around since 7,000 BC, when workers were paid in assets like grain, salt or clothes. The key takeaway from this element of the conversation focussed on whether payroll needs a rebrand . And, if so, how would we do this? Is it time to say goodbye to the ‘big red button’? The first thing we can all immediately do is to drop the negative connotations associated with payroll. How many times have you had a conversation with someone outside of the industry which sounded something like, “there's more to payroll than pushing a big red button”? I, for one, know I've said this more times than I'd like to take credit for. Do we need to drop the big red button for good? This isn’t what payroll professionals want people to remember us by.
