This week our Year 12 students have enjoyed an enrichment week following their recent school exams. The focus of the week has been thinking about future pathways with students having the opportunity to learn more about university applications, including specialist pathways such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge, as well as alternative apprenticeship routes. The week included a trip to

St Mary’s University and ended with a well deserved trip to Thorpe Park. Our Year 9 students have really enjoyed their DofE training sessions preparing them for their upcoming expeditions. Any families planning camping trips over the summer will be delighted to hear that they have now acquired expertise in map reading, putting up tents as well as camp stove cuisine! The PTA are organising another Preloved Uniform Sale on Saturday 17 June. We would very much welcome donations of any unwanted uniform that is clean and in a good condition. The sales are a great way to support Waldegrave families to manage the cost of school uniform as well as raising vital funds for the school. As you will appreciate, there is real pressure on school funds as well as households due to inflationary costs. You can also support the school through our Waldegrave PTA KindLink. Just a reminder that this morning we shared an important safety message from the Richmond Schools’ Police Team about personal safety and the risks associated with gatherings at Teddington Lock. As the weather improves we know that everyone in our community wants to make the most of our idyllic local environment and we need to work together so that everyone can do this safely.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is Anxiety. The Mental Health Foundation has created the booklets that are attached to this message to support schools and families in responding to anxiety. This video has a useful explanation of what anxiety feels like and some simple strategies to help manage it and help young people build resilience. If you are interested in finding out more about how you, as a parent, can help your child build their resilience, you might wish to join a parent course we are planning. Please contact info@waldegravesch.org and use ‘Supporting Resilience course for parents’ as the subject of your email. Relationships and sex education Students in Key Stage 3 will be studying Relationships and Sex Education in their PDC lessons over the next half term. The lessons for part of a carefully planned, age appropriate, spiral curriculum and use PSHE Association Quality Assured resources. If you would like further information, please contact Ms Moore, via info@waldegravesch.org

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

Our Year 10s attending the German residential trip to Boppard departed early yesterday morning and will be returning on Sunday. We hope the students have an enjoyable experience and we look forward to hearing about it next week. Congratulations to the Year 10 students who are representing the borough in a European Youth Orchestra concert this week. Students from across Years 9, 10 and 12 all headed to France yesterday for this trip. We look forward to hearing about how they get on at this event next week. A big well done to Siqian in 10FBA for participating in numerous Music festivals within the last couple of months! Siqian participated in the Basingstoke Music and Arts Festival winning 1st place in both the Senior Recital class and the Duet class. She also participated in the Ealing Festival where she was commended in both the String Exhibition class and the Cello / Double Bass Concerto / Variations class! Congratulations to 10FBA & 10PON who are in joint 1st place for Epraise points this week with 10PGC being closely behind them. Well done to Vienna W in 10ERU who is top of the leaderboard in terms of earning the most epraise points last week. Year 10 prefects will have received a letter outlining their position and will start to undertake these duties over the coming weeks. We are sure they will carry out any roles and responsibilities in a mature way. The House Captain and Senior Prefect selection has also been finalised and we would like to thank all the applicants for their work during this process. They will also start to undertake various roles over the course of the rest of the year and into Year 11.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly “The betrayal flayed my skin, but his cowardice chips the bone. It poisons the marrow.”

Laura thought herself the hero when she saved a young woman from a brutal attack. This would go on to change her life in ways that no one could have predicted. Now she and her boyfriend Kit live constantly in fear, tiptoeing around society, trying to remain as invisible and off the radar as possible. However Laura knows that something is hidden, she is never quite seeing the whole picture of the story. This gripping thriller leads to crazy character developments and

horrifying revelations up till the very last page. ~Recommended by Miranda H, Year 9 student
