where for a small sum. Three British firms, unhappily, have been engaged in supplying Japan; but during the War, Government restrictions put a check to the traffic from this country. Unless early action is taken, it is feared that this trade may he reopened. Japan, however, has been free to continue, and she has introduced large quantities through Kiachow, which she captured from Germany, in cases marked “ Gov ernment stores.” It is actually reported that as much as eighteen tons of mor phia have been imported into China in one year. When it is considered that, ac cording to Sir William Collins, one of the largest London hospitals only used thirteen pounds of opium and five oun ces of ¡morphia in one year, it is not diffi cult to realise the havoc caused by the free sale of immense quantities of so deadly a drug. jH M THE ONE MAN PREACHER H. Clay Trumbull said,: “ How were Peter and the other apostles brought in to Christ’s service? Were they won by an appeal to a multitude? That is the point to he considered when we would know whether Christian work is to he done with the one or with the many. John the Baptist spoke to .two of his disciples concerning Jesus, and the two turned and followed Jesus. One of those men was John, the other was Andrew. At once Andrew went and called Simon, who was later known as Peter. Thus, it seems that Peter, who is credited with winning three thousand souls by a great sermon was himself won as an individual by an individual. That is God’s chosen way among men. Then Philip, a fellow townsman of ^Andrew and Peter, was won as a follower of Jesus. Next after this, Philip summoned Nathanael; and the circle of leaders was fairly started by the method of one man being the preacher, and one man being the hearer.”

teachings of the cults, and conferences at which Bihle lectures on fundamental subjects will he given. Thousands of copies of the chart, “ The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error,” have already been circulated by the league throughout the United States and other countries. The evi dence receiyed of the good accomplished by this means alone has been sufficient encouragement to believe that the Lord’s approval has been on the work. Many meetings have been held in Southern California and sermons on fundamental topics delivered. Further information regarding the league will he given in our next issue, hut we trust in the meantime many will write to Mr. Hadden, Van Nuys Build ing, Los Angeles, for printed circulars telling of the work. CREME ON THE CLIMB . Crime statistics show that in 30 years crime has increased 500 per cent in the United States, four times the increase in population. There were as many mur ders in Omaha last year as in London, with its five million people. Kansas City with a 300,000 population had more murders than the English capital. Mur ders in Kansas average one every other day. Authorities often fail to get the criminals and many are acquitted even when witnesses of the crime are found. Pennsylvania established the mounted police to check its wave of crime and its success has led New York state to adopt the same system of a state police inde pendent of thé city force. MORPHIA IN CHINA The curse of opium has been deplora ble, but to-day China is afflicted with what is immeasurably worse. Largely through Japanese action, morphia has been introduced into the country, and hypodermic injections of this deadly drug can now he obtained almost any-
