Personal Work-in the Homes The Bible Woman’s work is not al ways a success from the human stand point, and the following is frankly re-, lated for the encouragement of those who are beginning to do per- BIBLE sonal work. WOMEN A lady just from the East, a stranger in town, was strangely impressed to get off a street car in front of the Bible Institute. She followed a crowd of women going to one of the Bible classes, and after sit- • ting a few minutes, rose and left the room. She returned, however, remark ing to the lady at the door that she was strongly impressed to remain. This second time she seated herself by one of the earnest workers in the class who found out, by tactful questions, that she was just going into Theosophy. The worker took special pains to introduce her to the teacher of the class who took her aside and had a long, earnest talk with her. The little woman told the story of her strange leading to the place; and the teacher suggested that probably a mother’s prayers were being answered. Still unconvinced as to her danger, she promised faithfully to meet for a longer discussion on another day of the week, when the Theosophical text books could be produced, and be shown to be contrary to the Bible her mother loved. A lady who had been a lecturer for the Theosophists and had been mar vellously brought back to the faith of her fathers, was kind enough to be pres ent at the time of the expected inter view ; but though much prayer had been made for the occasion, the poor little woman had not the courage to return and, despite this unusual intervention on God’s part to turn her from the path of error, she is still wandering. The earnest prayers of the reader are asked that she may yet hear the voice of the Lord and return. We often realize in personal work that our most earnest efforts to give out the Word of God are unavailing. It does not seem to penetrate. It would

seem as if Satan had built a wall of de fense around the person, and that they were indeed “ taken captive by him at his will.” Words spoken to them come rattling back upon one like pebbles cast against a wall. But prayer builds a wall, also, for defense. A very sick woman in a hospital was visited several times by some acquaint ances who were Christian Scientists, with a view to inducting her into their deadly teaching. She listened, patiently, courteously, though it did not appeal to her, much as she longed for relief from the intense suffering, and the recovery of her health. Finally they said to her: “ Well, its no use to continue to call. There seems to be a wall around you which we cannot penetrate.” When this was reported to some of the sick woman’s friends, with the re mark that it was hard to understand, they immediately exclaimed, “ Oh, but we understand; we have been praying for her for 'so long; it’s a wall of prayer!” A lady invited a stranger to attend a Bible class in her neighborhood. She came and after attending a few weeks, one day she spoke out in class and said, “ I’d like to know what you people mean by being saved.” An explanation was given and she publicly received Jesus as her Saviour right then and there. Later her own mother was saved, and recently died in an Eastern city. She writes to a friend, “ I can never give thanks enough for the lady who first invited me to a Bible Class where mother and I both found the Lord.”-4^ Mrs. T. C. Horton, Supt. Results After Many Days Some of the sleepy “ watchmen” on the walls of Jerusalem are beginning to awaken and commence to “ pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” We believe more intercession is being JEWISH offered to God on behalf of WORK Israel than ever before and as a result missionary work
