David has said it, and many others can testify to it that Cod is not going to allow you to go begging for bread. As a Christian, do not fall into the temptation of using time and energy that you ought to be giving to the service of Cod! The Lord may not allow you to have any future. He may move into your life physically because He loves you. We have a legitimate right to put some of our income into sav ings or other forms of investment. But when we leave little or no time for serving the Lord we are guilty of confiding and resting in material things instead. It would be better to live on a little less, and thus give more time for the acquisition of riches toward God. We need to be careful as we face the problem of the economy around us that we do not put all of our trust in hu man riches and energy. Let us give God His share, because someday we will have to give an account of all we have done. Economic Survival Everyone experiences emotional stresses. None of us is exempt from them. And yet, there is real deliverance. Today's society is hos tile to the believer. Cod has prom ised to provide for His people. We are not dependent upon the gov ernment's cost-of-living index. We are certainly to be good stewards of the money with which Cod has entrusted to us. In II Timothy 6:6-8 we find Paul's good word that "Godliness with contentment is great gain." Our final destination is heaven where there will be no suffering, pain or sorrow. The woes and problems of earth will be over
when we reach that blessed land. There we will not have to face the problems of inflation any longer! The Bible is our survival kit, con taining instructions on how we can meet economic difficulties head on. In Luke 12, starting with verse 13, we find how the Lord Jesus met these same concerns in His day. One asked Him to require his brother share his inheritance. Jes us then warned him of covetous ness. After all, a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. Then the story was given by the Saviour about the rich fool who had everything to live with, but nothing to live for! Every man who seeks to push himself ahead should read this account at least once a month. The Lord warns of two perils related to the subject of money. The first is that we must never covet riches. This is defined as a selfish desire to have more than one already possesses. Dr. Wuest translates it as "eve ry kind of greedy desire for more." This is listed among the most vile sins in the realm of darkness. Think how many have succumbed to its dan gerous appeal. Co lo s s ia n s 3:5 shows covetousness as idolatry. I Corinthians 6:10 finds it listed among those sins which will keep the unconverted out of the King dom of God. The warning to be ware of cove tousness is w e ll- founded by the Apostle Paul (I Tim. 6:9). The second peril of which Jesus speaks is the danger of confiding in riches. This peril is applicable to unsaved men and women who seek to satisfy their souls with the fruits of material gain. It also car- Page 47
