My interest in dentistry goes all the way back to my youth. Well, sort of. I wasn’t directly interested in dentistry, but I was fascinated by the health sciences and the idea of healing people. And, as a kid, I loved working with my hands. My hobbies included building model cars, airplanes, and ships. Sometimes I would build the models from a kit, and other times I would use my imagination to customize a design of my own creation. It was through building models that I developed creative and fine motor skills, both of which would serve me well in the years to come. In many ways, pursuing a career in dentistry was an outlet for me to continue doing what I already loved. It brought together my fascination with the health sciences, health care, and healing, with a good measure of creative artistry. There were a few other bits and pieces from my youth that contributed as well. During high school and into college, I did a lot of photography. I loved capturing beauty on film. Along the same line, I took shop one year and created a lamp table. We were graded on workmanship, and I ended up walking away with a great table and top marks. These interests helped hone my creative eye. A lot of people don’t realize there is a creative component to dentistry. Many people assume it’s all about cleaning and check-ups, with the occasional filling or other minor procedure, but there’s a lot more to it than that. The mouth is part of a complex system, from the teeth to the gums to the things we can’t see under the surface. Plus, every mouth is different. Between two people, their teeth and gums may have the same general appearance, but there are many subtle differences most folks would never notice. Throughout my youth and into college, I developed an eye for fine details. That’s why I decided to become a dentist — it brings together the things I love, and I get to do it for other people. A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE

In all the years I’ve been practicing dentistry, I’ve found that every day brings on new and unique challenges. Just like every mouth is different, every day is different. I never know exactly what to expect, and that keeps it exciting. When I come into the office in the morning, I look forward to these challenges, and I look forward to seeing each person who comes through our door. It all comes back to one thing: I get to help people. I get to work through challenges and come up with creative solutions that meet each patient’s specific needs. It goes far beyond what you would expect. A patient may come to me in pain, and I have to figure out exactly what is causing that pain — whether it’s damage to a tooth or an infection. Tooth pain is the kind of pain you can’t sit on. When it hurts, it hurts, and it’s my job to solve the mystery and help the patient find the relief they need. That’s what I’m here for. My childhood interests, my schooling, and my experiences brought me to where I am today: here for the people who have come to rely on us for their dental care. Here for you. - Dr. Anthony Butcher

THE GRIND: WHY DO YOU WORK HARDER WHEN SLEEPING? What You Need to Know About Teeth Grinding

Do you often wake up feeling tired, with a headache, or with tension in your neck and shoulders?

Teeth grinding places significant pressure on the upper teeth and roof of your mouth. In addition to waking up feeling unrested, this pressure can cause headaches and tension through the head, neck, and shoulders — not to mention the damage it can do to your teeth.

As you sleep, the muscles in your face, jaw, and neck relax. As they relax, your airways become smaller. For some people, the airway can even become partially obstructed, and this can lead to snoring and sleep apnea. Many people experience one or the other, and some have both. While snoring can be noisy, sleep apnea comes with serious health concerns. Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing. You may stop breathing for as little as a second or for a few minutes. These interruptions can happen dozens of times in a single night. Every time you stop breathing, your blood oxygen levels are lowered. In response, your body tenses up in an attempt to widen the airway. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen. As your body tenses, muscles in your jaw, neck, and head tighten, and your tongue presses forward against the back of your teeth. This combined effort of your tightening muscles is what causes teeth grinding, or bruxism. It is a survival action initiated to keep the oxygen level at a minimum in the brain.

Treatment for bruxism varies from person to person:

For some, all they need is a custom-fitted mouth guard.

Others may just require a change in sleep positioning.

And a few may need the assistance of a CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) to reduce the effects of sleep apnea, helping them finally sleep restfully.

In any case, if you have any symptoms of teeth grinding, be sure to discuss them with your

dentists, who can help guide you to a possible solution. Give us a call for a free report, titled “Clenching, Grinding, and Guards.”

The Best Water Sport You Haven’t Tried Yet

THE BEST WATER SPORT YOU HAVEN’T TRIED YET Why You Should Get Into Stand-Up Paddleboarding Today!

It’s the end of summer, and before fall and winter start to creep in, you can still take advantage of the warm weather and jump into the world’s fastest-growing water sport, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). This sport is exactly what is sounds like. You stand on a paddleboard — like a surfboard but wider and more buoyant — and use a long paddle to glide across water. It sounds simple enough, but with a 200 percent boost in gear sales in the last year alone, SUP fans can tell you how much fun “simple” can be. Stand-up paddleboarding has ancient roots in African, Peruvian, and Hawaiian cultures. Thousands of years ago, each independently developed traditions of traveling across the water while using a paddle and a longboard. However, it was the Hawaiians who surfed the big waves with a paddleboard, and Maui surf legend Laird Hamilton was the first person to bring SUP to the continental United States. Most stand-up paddleboarders aim to battle the waves to challenge their balance and core strength, but you don’t need to live by the ocean in order to enjoy paddleboarding. Wide lakes, lazy rivers, and even

fierce rapids can all be perfect places to paddleboard. Basically, if you can bring a canoe, you can SUP there, too. Many outdoor gear providers across the world rent out SUP supplies

now, so you can try it out with your friends before fully investing in the sport.

Part of what makes SUP so fun is how the simple premise has been adopted into so many other activities.

SUP enthusiasts created specially designed paddleboards for fishing, yoga, racing, and even touring the open ocean. So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy these last days of summer and have some fun out on the water!
