ANTEPROYECTO PLAZA PÚBLICA TORRES DE TAJAMAR Conceptual Project for the Tajamar Towers Public Square
Propuestas para recuperar la Plaza Atria como espacio público a la vez de rendir un homenaje al arquitecto Fernando Castillo Velasco, coautor de las emblemáticas Torres de Tajamar, buscó este concurso organizado por la Municipalidad de Providencia. This competition, organized by the Municipality of Providencia, called for proposals to recover Atria Plaza as a public space while paying tribute to architect Fernando Castillo Velasco, co-author of the famous Tajamar Towers.
En 2013 la Municipalidad de Providencia se adjudicó los fondos para organizar un concurso de anteproyectos en la Plaza Atria, en el entorno de las Torres de Tajamar. El objetivo era definir una propuesta arquitectónica y paisajística que permitiera poner en valor el espacio público de esta plaza, concebida como remate del Parque Balmaceda, hoy en día ocupada por dos estaciones de servicio y dos estacionamientos. Las torres se emplazan en un punto geográfico y urbano singular, que constituye el límite oriente de una gran franja prácticamente libre de edificación y que se prolonga hacia el Parque Forestal al poniente. Otro importante objetivo era rendir un homenaje póstumo al arquitecto Fernando Castillo Velasco en un lugar tan significativo como las Torres de Tajamar, de las cuales fue coautor desde la oficina Bresciani Valdés Castillo Huidobro (BVCH). Cuarenta propuestas respondieron al llamado a concurso, las cuales fueron evaluadas por un jurado constituido por el arquitecto Nicolás Valenzuela, en representación de la alcaldesa de Providencia; el arquitecto Cristián Castillo Echeverría, hijo de Fernando Castillo, en representación de la familia; Cristóbal Molina, representante del CNCA; Sebastián Gray, presidente del Colegio de Arquitectos; María José Castillo, asesora urbanista de la Municipalidad de Providencia; Julieta Guardia, representante de la comunidad de residentes de las Torres de Tajamar, y Cristián Undurraga, en representación de los concursantes. El director del concurso fue el arquitecto Patricio Gross. Por votación unánime se acordó premiar las propuestas de Murtinho + Raby Arquitectos, Beap Arquitectos y Felipe de Ferrari. In 2013 the Municipality of Providencia received funds to organize a conceptual project competition for Atria Plaza, in the vicinity of the Tajamar Towers. The goal was to define an architectural and landscaping proposal that would enhance the public space of the square, designed as the end of Balmaceda Park but nowadays occupied by two gas stations and parking lots. The towers are located in a unique geographic and urban point; the eastern limit of a large strip of land virtually free of buildings that extends west to the Forest Park. Another important objective was to pay a posthumous tribute to architect Fernando Castillo Velasco in such a significant place as the Tajamar Towers, which he co-authored at the Bresciani Valdés Castillo Huidobro (BVCH) office.
Forty proposals responded to the call for entries, which were evaluated by a jury consisting of architect Nicolás Valenzuela, representing the Mayor of Providencia; architect Cristián Castillo Echeverría, son of Fernando Castillo, representing the family; Cristóbal Molina, representative of the CNCA; Sebastián Gray, president of the Association of Architects; María José Castillo, planning advisor from the Municipality of Providencia; Julieta Guardia, representing the community of residents of Tajamar Towers, and Cristián Undurraga, on behalf of the competitors. The director of the competition was architect Patricio Gross. By unanimous vote the proposals by Murtinho + Raby Arquitectos, Beap Architects and Felipe de Ferrari received awards.

Durante más de 50 años, el estanque fue el elemento ordenador de este extremo del parque, permitiendo su uso por los visitantes y ofreciendo un soporte para destacar el monumento a Rodó / For more than 50 years the reservoir was the organizing element of this end of the park, facilitating visitor use and highlighting the Rodó monument.
