El terreno donde se debía construir el Centro mira a Av. Vicuña Mackenna, amplia avenida por donde circula el metro elevado, con una estación al frente. A lo anterior se sumaban altos edificios al otro costado de las pistas. Todo ello hacía que la pequeña edificación de seis pisos originalmente proyectada se viera insignificante (alternativa 1). Se propuso entonces que el programa se infiltrara subterráneamente en los patios traseros de los edificios cercanos, sin competir con su contexto (alternativa 2). Al encargo se agregó un auditorio para 800 personas y un faculty club . El planteamiento sumergido mejoraba el entorno y aumentaba las áreas verdes para alumnos y profesores. Además su cubierta vegetal disminuía en un 25% aprox. el gasto energético. La proposición fue aprobada.
The site where the center was to be built lies next to Vicuña Mackenna Avenue, a wide thoroughfare with an elevated Metro line and a station in front. In addition, high-rise buildings are built across the street. These elements contributed to the visual insignificance of the six-story building originally designed (alternative 1). The proposal was then modified placing the program under the courtyards of the adjacent buildings, without interfering with the surrounding context (alternative 2). An auditorium for 800 people and a faculty club were added to the commission. The underground approach improved the site context and increased green areas for students and teachers. In addition, its green roof decreased energy expenditure by 25%. The new proposal was approved.
