El conjunto bajo tierra forma una “T”, dejando visible solamente un cilindro de cobre que sirve como referencia externa y recuerda la actividad cuprífera de la empresa donante. Contiene los dos accesos generales y es enlace de los distintos programas. Su rampa interior aloja un pequeño museo de la historia de la Facultad y de las actividades mineras del Grupo Luksic. En el eje oriente-poniente de la “T” se excavó una “grieta” que remata en el cilindro. Esta grieta, junto con una serie de pequeños patios, brinda luz y ventilación natural a los recintos. A lo largo de ella se exponen minerales de las diferentes regiones del país. En el brazo izquierdo de la “T” se ubicó el auditorio y en el derecho el faculty club . Además de la cubierta vegetal, el proyecto incorpora otros ítems de eficiencia energética. Los muros adosados a la tierra en oficinas y salas de clases generan un ambiente térmico de alto estándar, con bajas demandas de energía para enfriamiento y calefacción. The underground complex forms a “T”, leaving visible a single copper cylinder that serves as external reference and recalls the copper mining activity of the donating company. It contains two main entrances and links the different functional programs. Its inner ramp lodges a small museum of the history of the Faculty and of the mining activities of the Luksic Group. A “fissure” was excavated on the east-west axis of the “T“ ending with the cylinder. This fissure, together with a series of small courtyards, provides light and natural ventilation to the premises. Minerals from the different regions of the country are exhibited along the way. The auditorium was placed on the left arm of the “T“ and the faculty club on the right. In addition to the green roof, the project incorporates other elements for energy efficiency. The earth retaining walls in offices and classrooms generate a high standard thermal environment with low energy demands for cooling and heating.
