El terreno se conforma por dos zonas claramente definidas. El área original del ex colegio Ernesto Pinto, ubicado en la parte baja, es la fundacional, con fuerte presencia hacia la ciudad. La otra zona, ubicada en la parte alta, configura una gradería natural en el terreno potenciando así la contemplación del paisaje. De esta forma la nueva escuela se organiza de la siguiente manera: se mantiene el área de acceso tradicional con mayor presencia urbana, donde está el hall de acceso, administración y biblioteca; por otra parte también se consolida el volumen de pre kínder cercano a la llegada de los padres. En la parte alta se sitúan los programas propios de la escuela, con las actividades de los alumnos de 1° a 8° básico. Esta área cuenta con estacionamiento para eventos masivos, gimnasio y casino, área básica medio menor, área básica medio mayor, talleres, laboratorios y especialidades. Galpones, casonas y casas sureñas son representativos del paisaje del sur de nuestro país. La aleatoriedad de su disposición, la volumetría simple y funcional, que protege de las inclemencias climáticas y la linealidad de sus espacios fueron elementos referenciales en la concepción de la escuela. Estas características conceden una clara referencia para ser reinterpretadas en una arquitectura regional contemporánea.
Two clearly defined sectors compose the site. The original area of the former Ernesto Pinto School, located at the bottom, marks the foundation and has a strong presence in the city. The other area, located at the top, resembles a natural grandstand on the site that invites contemplation of the landscape. The new school is organized as follows: the traditional access area maintains its urban relationship with the entrance hall, administration and library and the addition of the pre kindergarten building, close to the parents’ drop-off area. The school functional programs are located at the top, with the students’ activities from 1 st to 8 th grade. This area has parking for large events, gym and canteen, the first and second cycles of primary school, workshops, laboratories and trade workshops. Sheds, mansions and traditional houses are representative of the landscape of southern Chile. The randomness of their position, their simple and functional volumes that protect from the elements and the linearity of its spaces were the references for the design of the school. These characteristics provide a clear direction, reinterpreted in this contemporary regional work of architecture.
