ARQUITECTURA SUBTERRÁNEA CTES 2014 / CTES 2014 Underground Architecture
Con 25 anteproyectos de alumnos de once universidades se desarrolló la primera versión de este concurso organizado por el Comité de Túneles y Espacios Subterráneos de Chile con apoyo de la AOA.
The first version of this competition organized by the Committee of Tunnels and Underground Spaces of Chile, with support from the AOA, received twenty-five student projects from eleven universities.
El certamen nació con el objetivo principal de incorporar el tema de la edificación subterránea a los planes de estudios de las escuelas de Arquitectura, y resultó la instancia adecuada para incrementar el conocimiento de los futuros arquitectos sobre el espacio subterráneo y de las posibilidades de su uso en la ciudad, desafío que necesita la mirada de las nuevas generaciones. El jurado –que evaluó 25 anteproyectos, entre los cuales seleccionó tres primeros lugares y tres menciones de honor– fue integrado por Osvaldo Fuenzalida, en representación de la AOA; Agustín Infante, Felipe Hosiasson, Cristián Undurraga, Pablo Jordán, Smiljan Radic, Alexandre Gomes, presidente del CTES, y Giorgio Piaggio M., especialista en ingeniería subterránea y director de CTES. El director fue el arquitecto Enrique Burmeister. El concurso contó con el patrocinio de la CDT, la Cámara Chilena de la Construcción, la Dirección de Arquitectura del Ministerio de Obras Públicas, Corfo, la AOA y el Colegio de Arquitectos.
The competition was born with the main purpose of introducing the issue of underground construction into the curricula of architecture schools, and resulted in an appropriate instance to increase the future architects’ knowledge on underground space and the possibilities of urban implementation, a challenge that requires the eye of the younger generation. The jury –which evaluated 25 projects and chose three first places and three honorable mentions– was composed of Osvaldo Fuenzalida, representing the AOA; Agustín Infante, Felipe Hosiasson, Cristián Undurraga, Pablo Jordan, Smiljan Radic, Alexandre Gomes, president of CTES, and Giorgio Piaggio M., expert in underground engineering and director of CTES. The director was architect Enrique Burmeister. The competition was sponsored by the CDT (Technological Development Commission), the Chilean Chamber of Construction, the Architecture Department of the Ministry of Public Works, CORFO (Production Development Corporation), the AOA and the Association of Architects.

Calama, ciudad oasis en el desierto de Atacama, ha experimentado una agresiva implantación de canales y pozos en el río Loa para la producción minera. La minería ha impactado en el desarrollo sostenible de la ciudad, tanto en lo social como medioambiental: en pocos años las hectáreas cultivables se han reducido de 5.000 a 800. La intervención busca integrar la minería con el paisaje, revirtiendo el impacto de la actividad minera reciente.
Calama, an urban oasis in the Atacama Desert, has experienced the aggressive implantation of canals and wells in the Loa River, to serve the mining industry. Mining has therefore strongly influenced the sustainable development of the city, both socially and environmentally: in a few years the arable hectares have been reduced from 5,000 to 800. The intervention seeks to integrate mining into the landscape, reversing the impact of the recent mining activity.
