B REAKING THE S ILENCE : Mental Health Awareness and Access in African American Adult Populations

M ental health awareness and access to care are vital components of overall well-be- ing, yet numerous barriers continue to impede African American adults from seeking the help they need. Stigma, cultural factors, and systemic inequalities have contributed to a concerning lack of mental health support within this community. This article explores the importance of breaking the silence sur- rounding mental health and highlights strategies to promote awareness and access in African American adult populations. Cultural Factors and Mental Health Cultural factors play a significant role in shaping mental health perceptions within African American communities. The concept of "strong black woman/man" can lead to the suppression of emotions and a reluctance to acknowledge vulnerabilities. Moreover, historical trauma, such as experiences of slavery and racism, can influence mental health struggles that may manifest as present-day challenges.
