FAO DIGITAL FOR IMPACT 2022

1.1. Digital for impact: digital capabilities as accelerators to support the transformation of agrifood systems 25

United Republic of Tanzania

“The DSP has the potential to increase timely access to weather information and advisory, as well as market information, for informed decisions by the stakeholders across agricultural value chains.” Mponda Malozo

Ugani Kiganjani (extension services in the palm of your hand) complements other digital services portfolios in the country aimed at serving farmers, livestock keepers, fishers, etc., including M-Kilimo (text-based mobile extension services from the Ministry of Agriculture) and EMA-i (the FAO mobile app for timely animal disease field reporting to enhance surveillance). In collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC) and the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), the DSP was filled with messages for roll-out under four main themes: weather forecast and advisory, livestock and fisheries, AgriMarketPlace (information is still being populated) and e-NutriFood. These messages are currently being accessed by over 300 agricultural stakeholders every seven days, countrywide, in accordance with the system analytics.

Interest has been shown in pursuing the app roll-out in Zanzibar and in supporting food security early warning and market information systems for the increased frequency of timely reporting to the general public by relevant authorities on the island through the DSP.
