Southern African Development Community (SADC) Agricultural Information Management System (AIMS)
“This web-based application will provide SADC Member States with standardized instruments necessary to produce and disseminate comparable statistical information to inform SADC policies.”
Patrice Talla
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and FAO have unveiled together the first SADC Agricultural Information Management System (AIMS), a platform to generate agricultural data for the region’s evidence-based decision-making. The multiple phase 3- year development cycle culminated in the launch of the AIMS platform on 21 September 2022.
What?
The SADC AIMS platform is a web-based application with 12 modules for collecting, storing and analysing agricultural information and is run out of the SADC headquarters data centre. Plans are being made to move the platform from physical servers to the cloud in 2023.
How?
The system has been developed using the Agile lifecycle phase-by-phase incremental approach, whereby each phase goes through the process of requirements identification, a nalysis, design, building and stakeholder demonstration and feedback. Each phase delivered concrete, tangible results that could be tested and implemented; stakeholders’ feedback was collected after each delivery, with user acceptance testing and documentation as validation. FAO was involved throughout the year in reviewing and contributing to the SADC technical road map, including the linking of the project to HiH resources.
