Digital transformation in action

Jordan Integrated Agricultural Management Information System (JIAMIS)

“There is huge opportunity in the NENA [Near East and North Africa] region to repurpose digital assets to improve the lives of farmers and facilitate efficient resource utilization.”

Amy Davidson

The JIAMIS is a farmer registry and voucher system created with the intention of helping small farmers. The system functionality enables the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) to register farmers and create, manage and distribute vouchers to them. Funded by the European Union MADAD Fund, JIAMIS is the result of very close collaboration between the FAO country offices in Jordan and Lebanon. The application will cover all agriculture areas: highlands, Jordan Valley and Badeya for all farmers. It is in demo phase and will go live shortly at MoA. Taking best practices from ZIAMIS and KIAMIS and introducing them to Jordan, FAO became involved by suggesting the specific creation of a farmer registry, showcasing an example of working systems and by helping to install the demo at MoA.

Jordan National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Data Repository System (DRS)

Created by a service provider and delivered to NARC in the summer of 2022, DRS is a digital system that represents the first step taken by NARC to digitize its procedures and processes. It is essentially a project management and approval workflow system. In addition, it makes the research performed at NARC available to the public as the repository for documents associated with projects, as well as videos, photos, books, brochures, scientific papers.

Researchers at NARC will use DRS at every phase of an agriculture project, from the proposal to project completion. Farmers also have direct access to the latest developments in agriculture, and DRS facilitates knowledge transfer to users from NARC experts, research project outcomes and private sector experts.

e-LAB

This is the second effort by the FAO country office in Jordan and NARC to digitize the procedures and processes of NARC. The e-LAB is a system (also available via mobile application) in which a farmer can request tests of their soil, for example, pay for the test and receive results, all online. The farmer is given directions on how to take the sample and how to send it to NARC, and e-LAB also provides a digital system inside NARC where the entire procedure and process are digitalized for research. The e-LAB was planned to go live on 31 December 2022 and was the result of ongoing efforts throughout the year.
