Digital transformation in action
1 000 Digital Villages Initiative (DVI)
“The successful implementation of these hubs will facilitate progress towards the digitalization of rural areas, promoting the transformation of the agricultural sector and improving its productivity.”
Agustin Zimmermann
Launched by the FAO Director-General, the 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative is currently developing across the world and aims to convert villages across the world into digital hubs to support the acceleration of rural transformation and reduce the digital gap, including the gender and rural divide. Digital villages can be engines to increase resilience, diversify incomes of farmers and build back better. FAO is thus working with many partners to develop rural digital inclusion initiatives on the ground, aiming to bring innovation much closer to the needs of small-scale farmers by enabling policies, enhancing capacities, increasing affordability and improving infrastructures.
What?
In Kenya, FAO developed and implemented a DVI scoping exercise in 2021 with the results being fed into the formulation of a new project to be funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and led by FAO.
How?
The main goal is to institutionalize the KIAMIS platform within governmental operations, build on the national farmer registry to deliver additional value-added services and provide the extremely vibrant agricultural innovation community with an API platform to interact with the data. A proposal for an HiH project in Kenya is considering using KIAMIS for tracking national animal feed balance data.
