1.2.2. Creating dialogue in digital agriculture

AgroInformatics TechTalks

Under the digital for impact topics, a new series of AgroInformatics TechTalks was launched in 2022. These events aimed to spark peer-to-peer discussions and strengthen the community of experts inside and outside FAO working at the intersection of science, data and technology for sustainable development and agriculture.

Three were organized, as follows:

The first FAO AgroInformatics TechTalk's focus was on operational monitoring of land surface phenology from polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites in support of sustainable agriculture, forestry and rangeland management. The invited speaker was Dr Xiaoyang Zhang, Co-Director of the Geospatial Sciences Centre of Excellence, South Dakota University, the United States of America. The second AgroInformatics TechTalk on Open-source tools and data for model applications in agriculture welcomed Senior Scientist, Dr Allard de Wit from the Wageningen University & Research, Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The third Agroinformatics Tech talk (accessible with password 1@LS*^!x.) hosted Alexandre Caldas, UNEP Director, Chief of Big Data, Chair of the UN Geospatial Network, who presented the World Environment Situation Room (WESR) as a digital knowledge base platform, giving access and use of data, including geospatial and other data, information and knowledge for environmental early warning systems and action, and the UN Geospatial Network as a platform for Partnerships and One UN Action. Another technical webinar, organized with the FAO Technical Network on Nutrition, provided an opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with the FAO/WHO GIFT (Global Individual Food consumption data Tool). The webinar showcased examples and good practices in using dietary data to inform nutrition-sensitive policies and programmes and improve nutrition.
