50 Years
THE NEXT 50 YEARS – CHALLENGES AND INNOVATION If the next 50 years are anything like the last 50, we are in for more wild rides. If you read the news, you find that negativity sells, and it seems the wine industry is in the crosshairs of everyone that writes about it. Wine glut, over-production, changing demographics, grapevine viruses, health concerns and climate change are just some of today’s headlines. To this industry veteran (nice way of saying “old timer”), this is par for the course. Farming has never been easy, nor will it ever be. History has a way of repeating itself, and I anticipate we will revisit many of the same challenges and events that have shaped our industry since grapevines were first planted in 1779 by Spanish Father Junipero Serra at Mission San Juan Capistrano. For those that know me well, they know I don’t spend time thinking about the past or reminiscing about better times. To me, the best of times are ahead of us. Today, we have more tools and knowledge to overcome challenges and create wines that continue to show our collective talents and creativity. We will also become better farmers, farming in harmony with our land and environment rather than exploiting it. Most importantly, V. Sattui Winery will continue to be that place, where friends and family come together to
I was listening to the radio this morning and heard that NBA star Kevin Durant joined an elite group of 8 NBA players to score 30,000 points. Durant joins the ranks of NBA greats, including Michael Jordan, Kobe, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In the Davies’ household this is a big deal, as Cara has hanging in our hallway a signed KD jersey from his time with the Golden State Warriors!
This got me thinking about how hard it is to reach these milestones. Nearly 5,000 players have played in the NBA since its inception 76 years ago in 1949, and only 8 have surpassed 30,000 points. Reaching milestones in the wine industry is just as rare as the 30,000-point club. 2025 marks our 50th anniversary of making wine in the Napa Valley. Our early history goes back 140 years to San Francisco when the winery was originally founded in 1885 by Vittorio Sattui, and in 1975, Vittorio’s great grandson, Dario produced his very first vintage in the Napa Valley of less than 500 cases.
celebrate life on picnic tables shaded by century-old oak and olive trees with a great bottle of wine, good eats and surrounded by one of the most beautiful and magical places on earth, the Napa Valley. There has never been a better time to come back and visit V. Sattui. Please join us this year to help us celebrate 50 years, the grand opening of our Mercato del Gusto, and some of the best wines ever produced by V. Sattui Winery! Can’t wait to see you,
In 1975, there were 45 wineries in the Napa Valley and only 231 in all of California. Today, we have over 500 wineries in the Napa Valley and nearly 4,900 wineries in California. If we look further into the numbers, of all the wineries operating in the Napa Valley 50 years ago or longer, less than a dozen are still operating and owned in the same family today. I am humbled by this feat, as I’m sure KD is about his lifetime achievement. So much must go right, and without the nearly one thousand employees over the 50-year span contributing hard work, skill and tenacity to be the best, or the 10+ million visitors spending an afternoon on our picnic grounds enjoying great wines, salami, and cheese with friends and loved ones, we wouldn’t be celebrating 50 years today.

IT’S ALL ABOUT The People For the past 50 years, under the leadership of Dario Sattui and Tom Davies, V. Sattui has been more than just a winery—it has been a family. Generations of dedicated employees have poured their passion into this winery, many of whom are still with us today. Each one has left an indelible mark, shaping our story and becoming a lasting part of the V. Sattui legacy.

The way we got here is simple, we came for the wine and stayed for the people! I first walked into V. Sattui in 1989. I was just starting to develop a taste for wine, especially red wine. I knew immediately there was something special about these wines. Much later and after we were married, I told Gina about my early experience at V. Sattui. We decided to make a day trip out of it; enjoy some wine, a little lunch and explore V. Sattui. We did all of that and then some. We took a bunch of silly pics and then took a nap in our parked car. When we woke up everyone was gone, and we were all alone in the parking lot! We couldn’t wait to come back. This was the beginning of so many wonderful, and sometimes goofy times at our favorite place, V. Sattui Winery. A lot of places in the valley serve up wine. However, only one place serves V. Sattui. One of our favorite
things to do in the Napa area is meet new people who haven’t yet experienced V. Sattui and invite them over. We know that every person we invite to the winery will have an amazing time! We don’t see the staff as just employees; they’re our friends. They’ve always gone above and beyond to make every visit special for us, our guests, and our family. We’ve met so many wonderful people at V. Sattui, too many to list. The winery events are amazing. It’s as if everyone sets their differences aside and the only focus is the joy, laughter and love of V. Sattui. So many amazing stories we could tell and many more to come. We know that our family, for generations, will continue to make wonderful memories here and enjoy the best wines in the Valley.

Larry and I spent a year in Los Angeles from 1984-1985 while he was completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine. On our way home to the East Coast we took a trip to Napa Valley with friends. Little did we know it would start a love affair with the wine, the people, and the area. One of our first stops was V. Sattui. We bought some food, wine, and took the glasses outside to a picnic table and had a delightful afternoon. We grabbed any reason to return to Napa. At least every 4 years we visited V. Sattui and realized we found someplace special. We even started traveling abroad with V. Sattui on their Wine Cruises, going from Barcelona to Rome and Lisbon to London. We got to know other fans of the winery along with Tom, Cara, Brooks and Beth. We traveled with Franca through Tuscany and Umbria, bringing some of our best friends along for the fun and food.
We have so many wonderful memories of our visits: barrel tastings, spending afternoons in the Cellar Club, endless photos in front of the fountain, and virtual tasting during COVID. We have so many favorite wines – in particular Cabs and Zins: Preston (we still talk about the 2009), Morisoli and Mt. Veeder Cabernets, Black-Sears and Quaglia Zinfandels, Dust Up, Paradiso, and others. We’ve brought family and friends to V. Sattui for tastings and Harvest Balls and showed our children why we love V. Sattui. We share V. Sattui wines with friends at home on special occasions and regular days. There is always something to celebrate and V. Sattui is there with us to help celebrate it. We look forward to making many more V. Sattui memories.

n d u c V. Sattui Winery has been a special place for Nicole and me for years. In fact, she chose it as the very first stop on her 21st birthday! Since then, she and her sister Kirsten have visited countless times, and both ended up choosing V. Sattui as the place to get married. The winery has become a staple for our families, and every time we visit California, we make sure to stop by. Travis & Nicole Mann Friendswood, TX
Nicole and I got married in June 2009 at V. Sattui’s iconic tower on a beautiful day. Our guests didn’t just enjoy the stunning grounds, they experienced the incredible hospitality, the seamless wedding experience, and, of course, the fantastic wine. Now, whenever we have friends over, they know a bottle of V. Sattui will be opened. We usually start with a crisp Chardonnay before moving on to our favorite, the Sattui Family Red. It’s such a versatile wine—great with hamburgers, pasta, BBQ, and even perfect for the hot Texas summers. I love its bold Zinfandel blend, though when I’m in the mood for something bigger, I’ll reach for a Preston or Morisoli Cabernet with a perfectly cooked steak. Thanks to Chris Rota, our wine rack is always stocked! Every visit to V. Sattui has been memorable. We’ve enjoyed tastings with Bob Cuozzo downstairs in the Cellar Club, relaxing out back on Vittorio’s Terrace, and picnics on the front lawn. We’ve come as a couple, as a family, with friends who remember our wedding, and with friends discovering Napa for the first time. No matter what, every visit feels like we are coming home.

Some 20 years ago Tom and I started visiting Napa Valley and its beautiful wine country. V. Sattui was one of first wineries we visited! We instantly fell in love with the wine and enjoyed lingering in the beautiful picnic area. Plus, their staff is just the best!! We love chatting with Lacey Orona by phone. She always keeps us up to date with sales opportunities on our favorite wines and we finally got to meet her in person during one of our visits! Each time we visit wine country, V. Sattui is a definite stop! We have brought numerous friends and family with us and love sharing our annual Gold Room tastings!! Janet is a favorite and has always been a gracious host to us, our family, and friends when we visit. We enjoy sharing stories about Indiana. We keep our wine closet stocked with all our V. Sattui favorites: mostly reds, including Sattui Family Red and Pinot Noir
from Los Carneros and Russian River. We also enjoy the Zinfandels (Ramazzotti, School House Creek, Mounts, and Amador), and of course, their Napa Cabs!! We make good use of their Wine Futures program and take advantage of pre-release pricing on our standing favorites which helps to keep our cellar stocked. We need enough of it around since V. Sattui is a wine we love sharing with friends and family!!

A Decade of Dedication:
As he celebrates this milestone anniversary, we sat down with Jason to reflect on his journey, his winemaking philosophy, and what inspires his innovative approach to winemaking.
1. If you could share a bottle of your wine with anyone— living or historical—who would it be and why?
4. Describe your perfect day off—no vineyards, no cellars, just you doing what you love. First, I’d pack up our 1983 Scamp trailer and head out for a camping trip with friends and family—somewhere with fresh air, no emails, and just the sound of the trees. Exercise is a must, whether it’s tennis, cycling, swimming in a lake, or hiking to a waterfall—whatever gets the body moving and the mind clear. And, of course, no perfect day is complete without a great glass of wine by the campfire, because no matter how far I go from the cellar, wine is always part of the journey. 5. Ten years, countless grapes—what’s one epic moment from your VSW journey that still inspires you today? Picture this, Napa Valley is in the mist of the 2020 fires. Most of our staff is evacuated from their homes (including me), yet we still had every single production staff make it to work to get our wines made. We lost power a few of these days, and our fruit was trapped in the press overnight. No big deal, right? Wrong. The fermentation kicked off inside the sealed press, and by the next morning, it had built up an incredible amount of pressure. When we finally opened it, we were met with a literal force of nature. Proof that yeast, one of the tiniest organisms on the planet, holds incredible power. Winemak- ing is humbling that way. Much like the ocean, you should never turn your back on it.
I’d share a bottle of our 2018 Mount Veeder Cabernet with Julia Child. She had an unmatched ability to bring people together over food and an unwavering belief that enjoying wine should never be intimidating. She was an advo- cate for enjoyment over snobbery which is a philosophy I also embrace. I’d bring the wine, she’d bring the food, and together we’d prove that the best pairings are not only about flavors, but about laughter, curiosity, and good company. I hear that there will soon be a museum dedicated to her across the street from V. Sattui Winery. Yet another reason to come visit us here in Napa. 2. If your winemaking style had a theme song, what would it be and why? Red Red Wiiinnnne… just kidding, that is too generic. I would say Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Like winemaking, it’s layered, dynamic, and unpredictable. Each verse takes you somewhere new. Every harvest season brings different projects, new challenges, and unexpected twists, and you need to be ready to pivot on a dime. One moment it’s a soft ballad, the next it’s full-throttle rock—just like harvest. You must trust the process, ride out the tempo shifts, and wait for that grand, harmonious finale. 3. Where do you find inspiration for your winemaking outside of the wine world? I find Inspiration all around us. It could be from nature, family, food etc. It’s more about being present with yourself and be in the moment and put your darn phone down. Living in Napa means being surrounded by some of the most incredible restaurants, where every dish is a reminder of how flavors and aromas shape experience. I also find inspiration in the simplest of things: walking in the forest, cooking in my own kitchen, or browsing the spice market at Oxbow. Smell is the most powerful trigger of memory (even more so than photos or words). A single scent can take you back to childhood or across the world in an instant. Every day is a gift to smell something amazing.

2025 Reflections on our President’s Cruise - by Cara Davies Our 2025 President’s Cruise set sail this January aboard the luxury cruise line, Oceania with 100 customers joining myself, Tom, our Winemaker Brooks and his wife Beth. Our trip took us from Argentina’s vibrant capital city of Buenos Aires to the highest peaks of Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro; all the while exploring the beautiful scenery, colorful architecture, exquisite wines and culinary specialties of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. For most of us, this was our very first visit to South America and something on our bucket list.
As with all our past VSW cruises, our onshore programs were designed exclusively for our group and included once-in-a-lifetime experiences that we all shared together. I don’t think I will ever forget seeing some of our group (don’t worry, I won’t share photos) sporting authentic Carnevale costumes and headdresses doing the samba in Rio or meeting the Carrau family at their winery in Uruguay and enjoying an amazing lunch prepared by Uruguay’s finest Asador, Rodrigo Garcia. These were all rich and unforgettable moments, and we were honored we could share them with our fellow travelers. As remarkable as our onshore experiences have been for us, it is really through the events and times we have shared together aboard the ship that we have all been able to form such amazing friendships. To ensure plenty of wine for the cruise, we shipped ahead nearly 70 cases of wine to be enjoyed at our Welcome and Casual Wine Parties, Winemaker’s Dinner, Wine Seminars, and the famous Big Bottle Party, featuring over $20,000 of rare and one-of-a-kind large format bottlings. During these events, everyone shares a glass of wine (or two or three … but who’s counting), conversation, laughter and lasting bonds. There have also been spontaneous meetings; running into someone at The Barista having an espresso, deciding on a spontaneous lunch together in the Terrace or bumping into someone having a drink in the Horizons; all times well spent together. We have been blessed to have the greatest customers and getting to know you personally and sharing the VSW cruise experiences and our wines with you all has been an enriching and privileged experience for us. Thank you for being part of the VSW family.

Sattui Winery is proud to introduce James Ayers as our new Cheesemonger, bringing his unparalleled expertise to our soon-to-open Mercato del Gusto. With a career spanning fine cheese, gourmet foods, and world-class wine pairings, James is set to create an epicurean adventure that perfectly complements our diverse wine portfolio.
From his 18 years at Sunshine Foods in St. Helena to curating selections at Atelier in Yountville and Sonoma Cheese Factory, James has built a reputation as a leading authority on regional
and artisanal cheeses. But for James, cheese is more than a passion—it’s an obsession. He lives and breathes the world of cheese, traveling extensively to deepen his knowledge— attending Slow Food’s renowned cheese festival in Italy, foraging mushrooms in Parma, and sourcing the finest charcuterie in Spain—all in pursuit of the next perfect bite.
With his engaging, down-to-earth personality, James makes learning about cheese exciting and accessible. Whether he’s hand- cutting wedges for a guest, swapping stories about his latest European food adventure, or crafting a stunning charcuterie board, his enthusiasm is contagious. At V. Sattui, James will oversee a cheese selection of 200-300 varieties, lead pairing workshops and tastings, and ensure that every guest experience is interactive, educational, and delicious. His goal? To make V. Sattui’s Mercato the best in Napa Valley—a must-visit destination for wine lovers and food enthusiasts alike. Look for James in our new Mercato, opening late spring 2025, where he’ll be sharing his passion, flavor, and maybe even convincing you to try a cheese you never knew you’d love. Welcome to the team, James!
