Larona ’ s Letters
Dear Residents and Families, May is here and with it so many things to celebrate. We have Mother ’ s day, May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, the Kentucky Derby, and of course, my birthday! Kim, Sydney, Katie, and Chloe have a wonderful month planned for you and your loved ones. We are so grateful that we are able to offer our seniors an activity program that involves many of our community members that volunteer their time and talents. April showers bring May flowers and as everyone knows, I love flowers! Someone once asked me what my favorite flower was. I couldn't name just one. I am so looking forward to spring, the warmer weather, and things growing. Mother ’ s Day is just around the corner and we are so grateful for all the women in our lives who have had a tremendous impact on us! Enjoy May, Larona

Foxy Facts: History of Walking Canes There is a very long and interesting history of the walking cane. From the earliest of times people have used canes not only for walking but as an ornamental piece to accent their wardrobe and to show their status in society. Walking sticks started out as a necessary tool for the shepherd and travelers of the world. Walking canes date back to ancient Egypt where they were added to hieroglyphics as early as 4000 BCE. The Egyptian rulers were believed to have carried staffs. These were often topped by an ornamental knob. The ancient Greeks and Romans also used walking canes as a status symbol and were often shown with a cane in their hand. During the middle ages canes took on a more functional note. Clergy men carried canes as symbols of their religious authority. A scepter carried in the right hand was a symbol of royal power and carried in the left hand represented justice. In the Renaissance periods, canes became fashionable additions for the European elite. Canes were made from gold, silver and ivory and were often adorned with precious stones and elaborate carvings. Women began to carry canes. Maries Antoinette was known for carrying a Shepards cane. Sword canes started during the 16th and 17th centuries as concealed weapons. These became fashionable for men to carry a part of their daily wardrobe, but in 1702 men in the city of London were required to have a license in order to carry a walking cane containing a sword. During the 20th century walking canes went into a decline as a fashionable item, but continued to be used as an aide for those needing support. The origin of the white cane began in the time between the two world wars. In 1964 congress passed a law that allowed the president to declare a National White cane safety day to promote awareness and use of the white cane. The canes should be given to those who were blind or visually impaired. The history of the walking cane is a
story that spans centuries and cultures. As we continue to reproduce and develop new designs, walking canes will no doubt remain an essential part of our lives for years to come.

MAY BIG SCREEN MOVIES
On the first Saturday of every month the Ukulele Fight Club (UFC) plays for us at 10:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. They play a wide variety of tunes, mostly popular ones that we all know and love. They bring a happy, uplifting energy to Timber Ridge every time they’re here, and we have so much fun! Dancing and sing- ing along are highly encouraged, so if you have some new moves or high notes you’d like to show off, you know just where to go! All friends and family members are wel- come to attend. The ukulele is a small, four-stringed instrument, is easy for people to learn and play. It originated in Hawaii and has been a part of Hawaiian culture since the late 1800s. Ukulele means "jumping flea" in Hawaiian, referring to the quick finger movements of players. There are different sizes of ukuleles, including soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone, making it fun and accessible for various players.

The word "ukulele" is pronounced "oo-koo- lay-lay" Playing the ukulele can improve coordination, concentration, and even boost the immune system due to reduced stress levels. Whatever the benefits we sure enjoy the UFC Ukulele players and look forward to their music every month,

4 Hi Timber Ridge family! I was recently hired as the new full - time Activity Assistant here in Eureka. My name is Chloe Abner, and I wanted to take a moment to share a little about my journey and how I found my way to this wonderful community. I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and graduated from Bishop Amat High School in La Puente. Growing up, cheerleading was a huge part of my life—so much so that it helped me earn a college scholarship to Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida. Moving across the country was a big step, but it gave me the chance to pursue both my passion for cheer and my interest in psychology. After four amazing years, I graduated with my bachelor ’ s degree in psychology and went on to work as a mental health professional, focusing on youth

care. It was rewarding work, but over time, I started to feel a strong pull back home. I missed my family deeply, and as fate would have it, my perfect sister Eliza and her husband David both of whom work here at Timber Ridge—offered me a place to stay with them and their two beautiful boys, Ollie and Sammy. It didn ’ t take long before I fell in love with Eureka and the warmth of the Timber Ridge community. Thanks to the wonderful Kim in Activities, who happened to be looking for someone at just the right time, I was fortunate enough to land a position here. Since day one, every resident and staff member has made me feel so welcomed and appreciated.

Outside of work, I ’ ve stayed connected to my roots in cheerleading and currently coach the local all - star cheer team at Dream Athletics. It ’ s been such a joy helping the next generation of athletes grow in both skill and confidence. And I can ’ t forget to mention my dog, Zeke! He ’ s kind of a mutt a mix of all sorts of breeds but he ’ s my whole world. He ’ s been my constant through every chapter, and I can ’ t imagine life without him. Fun fact about me I love scary movies! Whether it ’ s a classic thriller or a cheesy slasher flick, I ’ m always up for a spooky movie night. Anyway, I truly enjoy coming to work every day. I ’ m so grateful to be a part of Timber Ridge, and if you'll have me, I ’ d love to stick around a while.

The Irresistible Iris What is it about the iris that is so alluring? Van Gogh often painted the beautiful flowers. The fleur - de - lis, a stylized iris, is a symbol associated with France, New Orleans, Florence, and even the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Perhaps it should come as
no surprise that this popular flower enjoys its own holiday on May 8. The word iris comes from a Greek word meaning “ rainbow, ” which is fitting since irises come in shades of purple, yellow, white, pink, and blue.
school as his brothers found work their to support the family. Hardy went to college for two years and then joined the Air Force. He was stationed to McClennon Park Air Force Base in Sacramento, California and remained in the service for four years. During his station in Sacramento Hardy started attending a Baptist Church and met his future wife Jean. However their courtship was not all smooth sailing (or should I say smooth flying) as Jean was determined NOT to marry a military man who would leave her alone to fight in endless wars. But Hardy was just as determined to marry Jean and so they dated for three years. When he was about to end his time in the Air Force she finally consented to marry Hardy and the rest was a love story that lasted 60 years. Hardy and Jean moved to Eureka when Jean got a job as a Recreation Director and Hardy worked for ALP Lumber Company on the Green Chain. When they shut down he starting working for HCAR as a driver. He worked for HCAR for 12 years before retiring. Hardy tells the story that when they moved to Eureka they started renting but when their rent was raised to $100.00 dollars a month they decided rent
Winds of Change
When you picture a windmill, you might imagine a quaint
wooden structure over looking a field of tulips or a peaceful farm scene. Although most no longer mill flour or help saw wood, today ’ s sleek, powerful windmills harness wind power to create energy. More and more, windmills towering over 200 feet tall, with blades longer than 100 feet, can be spotted on seashores and hilltops. Embracing Windmill Day, May 11, honors the ingenuity of our ancestors and underscores the im- portance of renewable energy sources in our present and our future.
