programs Registry on registry work! get caught up

RINDY FARMS, RICK & RANDY REINLASODER Ronan, Montana WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SUFFOLK AMNESTY PROGRAM? We’ve always appreciated what it means to have registered stock. One of our dairy show cows was registered and it was something we learned about from a young age. We’d fallen behind on registrations and needed some guidance and support on catching up. WHAT WAS THE GENETIC BACKGROUND OF YOUR FLOCK? Our flock has been a sibling team effort and we’ve been obsessive about pedigrees and following lines as far back as possible. We started with Luxford, George Brothers and Buckeye Acres genetics. Meeting Alan Batt in the late 90s exposed us to western style sheep and animals that were a bit more rugged and designed for range and commercial settings. The brood ewe flock goes back to a handful of influential females, with one of them being a Roger D. Nichols ( RDN) 2450 daughter that came from Randy Meyer. Six rams with Batt breeding have been used since 1997, with a couple of those coming from Mike Olsen. We’ve also used rams from Dreyer, Diamond Lane - Connie Scott (our mom) and Jeff Sandage. To focus on our maternal lines, we try to use our own buck lambs, out of outstanding mothers, as much as possible. WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO ENROLL? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET ALL THE INFORMATION TOGETHER TO SUBMIT? We had a family discussion to determine if we were all on the same page about bringing the flock registrations current. After agreeing that we wanted to move forward, it took some time to get all of the numbers and family trees on paper. Amanda was amazingly helpful in identifying the “dead ends” where registrations were missing. It took a couple of weeks to gather the information. We can’t thank Amanda enough for the assistance in completing the work! HOW HAS GETTING YOUR REGISTRATIONS CURRENT HELPED TO EXPAND YOUR MARKETING OPTIONS? It’s given us the opportunity to offer registered animals to new and young buyers. With the exception of commercial ram buyers, most customers want papers and the ability to trace the bloodlines. WHERE DO YOU PRIMARILY MARKET YOUR SUFFOLKS? We consign to the Idaho Ram Sale, sell rams directly to several commercial sheep operations and sell privately to folks that are looking for higher performing, registered Suffolks. SHARE A BRIEF STORY/SITUATION THAT SHOWED THAT THE DECISION TO UTILIZE THE AMNESTY PROGRAM PROVED A VALUABLE ENDEAVOR FOR YOUR OPERATION. A well respected Washington breeder referred a youth customer to us, as they were looking for ewe lambs. Given that they wanted to show, it was necessary to have papers on the sheep. Having the entire flock’s registrations up to date offered the opportunity to pick lambs from the entire group, rather than a subset. IF YOU’RE WILLING TO SHARE, WHY DID YOU GET BEHIND ON REGISTRATIONS? Life! There were financial and family considerations that were involved. The registered shows and sales that we’d been frequenting went away and it was unclear if registrations were needed. amnesty program Q&A
