meet your Junior Board WHAT IS ONE THING SOMEONE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I LOVE to cook and I’m really good at it. IF YOU COULD INVENT SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE OR DO? I have a big list of things I’d invent and at one time I wanted to be an inventor for my life. Mackenzie Hornbostel HOYLETON, ILLINOIS HOW DID YOU ORIGINALLY GET EXPOSED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP?
I got started with Suffolk sheep mostly because I like their unique style and temperament. I was only eight years old when I picked up my first five ewes (I was pretty small). The Suffolk sheep is not an aggressive breed and just fit well with my personality. WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES RELATED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? My most memorable moment with my Suffolk sheep was either the arrival of my first set of lambs born on our farm, or winning Champion slick shorn ewe last summer at The Event. WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE UJSSA BOARD? I became interested in the junior board because I love my animals. I’m very active in my livestock 4-H opportunities and this gave me another outlet to learn and grow both livestock and leadership skills as I’m getting older. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH A NEW JUNIOR MEMBER? The best piece of advice I could give younger kids is to always believe in yourself and to not be afraid to ask questions. There’s so many wonderful people in this association and the sheep industry would love to help our youth learn and grow. OUTSIDE OF SUFFOLK SHEEP, WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? Outside of Suffolks, I play the flute in my middle school band, a member of our church youth group, and very active in 4-H. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHEEP “JOB”? I really enjoy going with my dad on sheep jobs. My favorite daily job is feeding my flock. It’s wonderful to watch them all running to me when it’s feeding time. WHAT IS ONE THING SOMEONE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I cannot cook. Kayleen Kulas HOUSTON, MINNESOTA HOW DID YOU ORIGINALLY GET EXPOSED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? I originally got exposed through Suffolk sheep through my dad. His grandma had a flock of Suffolks and ever since then we have always had them on our farm. I got my first bottle lamb when I was very young and I have loved sheep ever since! WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES RELATED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? One of my fondest memories is winning the state with my Suffolk ewe lamb. Another memory was helping with all the youth at the Suffolk Event, the I love Suffolk sheep and helping lead youth. This opportunity has helped me connect with amazing Suffolk industry leaders across the country and meet great youth for a common goal, to make Suffolks great again. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH A NEW JUNIOR MEMBER? Attend the events and shows, the connections you will meet, will turn into forever family friends. OUTSIDE OF SUFFOLK SHEEP, WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? I am very involved on my college campus at SDSU in Little International, Lamb and Wool Club, Collegiate Cattlemen’s, Swine Club, Jacks Classic and I work at the SDSU Meat Lab. When I am at home I enjoy mentoring 4-H families, going to excitement in the upcoming youth was amazing to see. WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE UJSSA BOARD? My favorite sheep job is working in the lambing barn. I love seeing all the new babies jump around and play with each other. It is a very rewarding job even when you’re tired at 3 a.m. doing checks. AJ Harris JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS HOW DID YOU ORIGINALLY GET EXPOSED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? I got exposed to Suffolk Sheep from my dad because it’s been a family tradition to raise Suffolks. WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES RELATED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? Winning Champion and Reserve Champion Suffolk ram at the Suffolk Event. WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE UJSSA BOARD? The Suffolk breed is a passion of mine and I would like to leave an impact on the breed by making decisions that can make our breed grow. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH A NEW JUNIOR MEMBER? Keep at it. Every year you will get a little better and better, and with time you will be at the top, only if you put the work in. OUTSIDE OF SUFFOLK SHEEP, WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? I raise market sheep, as well as raise eight different breeds of sheep. I’m also involved in FFA and play basketball. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHEEP “JOB”? My favorite sheep job is shearing. WHAT IS ONE THING SOMEONE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I can’t touch my toes. IF YOU COULD INVENT SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE OR DO? I would invent something that could fill out my FFA record book for me. Allee Hoover WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA HOW DID YOU ORIGINALLY GET EXPOSED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? I was born on my family farm where my parents have been raising Suffolk sheep for over 40 years! WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES RELATED TO SUFFOLK SHEEP? My favorite memory I was able to share with my family was when I won Champion Slick Shorn Suffolk Ewe at the All-American Jr. Show. WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE UJSSA BOARD? I love the Suffolk breed and wanted an opportunity to network with other juniors and hold a leadership position in our association. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH A NEW JUNIOR MEMBER? To try and make as many connections as you can to help you have the best breeding program that you can! OUTSIDE OF SUFFOLK SHEEP, WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? I am super involved in my FFA chapter and serve as our chapter president. I also serve as my community fair’s queen. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHEEP “JOB”? My favorite sheep job is checking on the new babies throughout the night. I’m a huge night owl and love to take care of the new lambs when their mother’s decide to have them at 1 in the morning! WHAT IS ONE THING SOMEONE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I’m allergic to the cold and break out in hives when I get too cold. This is really
annoying when I have to go to the wash rack at Louisville! IF YOU COULD INVENT SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE OR DO?
For an FFA ag sales Career Development Event (CDE) last year my friends and I invented a service that provided rentable show products like fitting stands, clippers and blowers at shows. I feel like this would really come in handy for show families who are always forgetting their supplies!
