ARE YOU IN CONTROL? THE WAKE-UP CALL
Are you in control of your business, your career, and your future?
At the hospital, six hospital staffers loaded me into an MRI. The only thing louder than the hum of the machine was the sound of my thoughts. They were thoughts of things I had yet to do, things I had put off, and quality time I had not spent with the people that mattered to me. By the grace of God, I suffered no lasting injuries. I decided that from that day on, I was only going to work on things I was passionate about. I was only going to accept clients who energized me, and I was not going to let anyone decide how I would operate. I would take the time to do things that were important for my clients and my family and make those two previously competing forces live in harmony. Over a decade later, life is still a work in progress, but it is a process I enjoy every day. Not long after the accident, I went out on my own. I started from scratch, with no clients and no prospects. All I had was a burning desire and an innate talent to help people take control of their futures through relationship-based sales. These days, my success isn’t defined by bigger clients or bigger sales. It’s about controlling my own destiny and my own time. That’s the value my system provides. It helps people increase profits without compromising their beliefs. It helps them take control. Are you delivering the maximum value to your clients? Are you proud of the impact you have on others each day at work? Are you in control of your business, your career, and your future?
One cold winter morning, I was not focused on answering that question. I was flat on my back and strapped to a wooden board on a gurney as paramedics and doctors pushed me down a seemingly endless hallway. My mind was racing. I was not thinking about all the things I would not be able to do if the numbness below my shoulders remained. I was thinking about all the family things and life goals I had put off because I thought my work and my life could not coexist. Earlier that morning, I was hard at work in my office at Gallup Consulting. I chose to drop off a file at a client’s office instead of meeting my wife for lunch. I could have sent a messenger with the file or emailed the documents. I could have done several things, but the client demanded I bring the file personally so he could review the work and give me immediate feedback. I stepped off the curb with the rest of the pedestrians into the crosswalk. Then, the yellow cab hit me, and time stood still. The pedestrians stared in horror as I flew 24 feet and hit the
ground with a sickening thud. Someone called 911. A kind woman asked me if she could call someone as they loaded me into the ambulance.
If you answered “no” to any of those questions, this monthly newsletter is for you. I was only able to answer “yes” to the first two questions. It took getting hit by a taxi for me to realize just how important answering “yes” to the third question is as well.
These days, my success isn’t defined by bigger clients or bigger sales. It’s about controlling my own destiny and my own time. That’s the value my system provides.
