College – Issue 32

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE 2017 Annual Appeal

We are delighted to announce the 2017 Annual Appeal, which has a special focus on our College Chapel. At College, we take great pride in stewarding the heritage buildings we have so fortunately inherited. We owe it to the many boys who have already passed through these gates and to the others who are yet to enjoy the benefit of a Christ’s College education. Now that the major repair and renovation work has finally been completed, it is time to focus on some of the smaller things that need to be safeguarded for the future. We would like to ask you to help protect our Chapel windows through our Annual Appeal 2017. Several of the stained glass windows in the Chapel were designed, built and installed by artisans working in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. They are irreplaceable. We no longer have the skills and knowledge to match the specialist craftsmanship of that bygone age. Some commemorate the brave young men who fought and died in the South African War 1900–1902, the Great War and World War II. How could we not ensure their safety? Another window – The Tree and the River of Life by John Piper – draws visitors from all over the world.

Two cricket training nets for the Christ’s College Cricket Ground New nets would address safety, increase training time and result in fewer balls being lost. Gym equipment This will increase the gym capacity to 45 students at any one time, as currently the gym is underequipped for the number of boys attending training. Resident poet/writer A fixed term contract for a poet-in- residence who would work at College, tutor poetry workshops and deliver poetry to staff, students and the wider community. Restoration and preservation of the painting of Maria Somes With one third of current College boys able to attend College because of the Somes Scholarships and Somes Exhibitions, it is appropriate that the portrait of Maria Somes, as one of College’s major benefactors, be prioritised for conservation, restoration and a covering process. Centre for AR/VR development An opportunity to develop boys’ skills as creators in the virtual reality and augmented reality space and build educational knowledge and resources to support learning. Athletics measuring equipment To speed up the processing of discus, hammer, javelin and shot events. All of these projects are now funded and underway in 2017. Thank you again for your support as we look forward to providing boys with these exciting programmes.

The Piper window, in particular, needs strengthening and rehousing in its frame before it gets damaged beyond repair. As we did in 2016, we asked staff to submit applications for additional projects that enhance the learning programme for the boys. Technical theatre training To give interested boys the skills and aptitudes for all aspects of technical theatre, including health and safety and the use of contemporary technologies. Dance & physical theatre conditioning Similar to Co-motion to develop fitness, movement and physicality through the creative arts. To commission a unique College waiata A multi-functional waiata that would be used at College powhiri and College functions. Modernise Room P3 To upgrade P3 to be an innovative, dynamic and engaging learning environment. Purchase of a dedicated jazz drum kit A new kit would be smaller overall, have particular tonal quality, tuning and timbre specifically for jazz – and be much more transportable.
