Living and Thriving More Intentionally
Carrying a Lighter Heart
stress, and mania to consume us. But if we examine a time when we were happiest with ourselves and most content in our lifestyle and relationships, I think we’ll find a direct correlation with being present especially during key moments. The need to be present and intentional with our time is paramount. Sometimes, we all are guilty of being too fixated on where we’ve been and where we’d like to go, but we neglect the present. Cellphones are often the No. 1 distraction in our lives. Have you ever been to a gathering or event, only to find yourself in competition with people’s cellphones? These days, everyone is checking their emails, fixated on social media accounts, typing out a text, or browsing the web instead of interacting with the people who are right in front of them. Don’t get me wrong; I’m guilty of it, too! But it’s something I’ve picked up on, and I’m working to change it.
It’s often said that sometimes “later” ends up becoming “never” — so it’s important to do things now. This September, as we celebrate Self-Improvement Month, it’s important to reflect on all we’ve accomplished this year and to also look back on what we would like to change or improve upon. After all, it’s good to make a plan to accomplish our goals since we are our best competition! Recently, I heard someone who spoke about self-help, and he stressed the importance of living with a light heart. This spoke to me in more ways than one. A silent killer, he said, is when we hold grudges against people because it creates a wall of anger that separates us from social interaction, love, and happiness. I think that now, more than ever, we need each other, and whether we are holding grudges, feeling upset with the current state of the world, bogged down with work, or finding ourselves stressed out, we can all work on living more intentionally and with a lighter heart. The question becomes not “when” but rather “how,” because I believe when we put off goals, then months, quarters, and even years fly before our eyes. And quite honestly, life is a bit too short. I’m not saying we need to overhaul our lives or turn our current routine and mindset upside down, but instead, I encourage you to take an extra moment each day to think about how you can be more interactive with your loved ones, intentional with your time, and more at peace in general.
“The need to be present and intentional with our time is paramount.”
So, how can we all be more present, intentional, and willing to improve upon ourselves? Our kids just went back to school for the 2022–2023 school year. It got me thinking … What did we do to make those last few weeks of summer vacation count and what could we have done differently? Is there an extra hour or two you could spend over each weekend with your family or loved one? What distractions can you set aside to ensure you are more present? This month, let’s come together to celebrate Self-Improvement Month by creating time and energy for each other. A little goes a long way, and it all starts somewhere. –Josh Whisler

It’s Unbelievably True! THE CRAZIEST OLYMPIC MARATHON OF 1904
In 1904, the year of America’s first Olympics, the men’s marathon was a bizarre spectacle to behold. In fact, it was likely the most jaw-dropping event ever in the history of the Olympic Games. On that hot, sweltering summer day in St. Louis, MO, only 14 of the 32 Olympic competitors crossed the finish line on what was deemed the most difficult course anyone was ever asked to undertake. Thomas Hicks, the American who actually came in first, received the slowest time of all of the Olympic marathons since 1896. But why was this one so tough? With temperatures of roughly 104 degrees F and 90% humidity, a rigorous 24.85-mile course with seven hills was a bit much for competitors. Not to mention, support cars were churning up dust, leaving it behind for the runners to inhale, and they only had two water stations available before the halfway mark — and none in the second half! Even seasoned runners were not up to this crazy course! Three hours and 13 minutes after the marathon began, Fred Lorz, who had ridden a third of the course in a car, crossed the finish line. He was about to be adorned with a floral wreath when he confessed he had gotten so tired that he accepted a ride from one of the cars along the way, so he was disqualified.
Thomas Hicks, the true winner, was struggling with just 7 more miles to go. His fans on the sidelines provided him with a secret energy booster mix — a concoction containing strychnine (rat poison), brandy, and egg whites. By the time he crossed
the finish line, he was hallucinating. And the fourth-place winner from Cuba wore dress pants and shoes for the entire race (because he lost his money gambling in New Orleans on his way to St. Louis and arrived after hitchhiking with nothing but the clothes on his back!).
This 1904 Olympic marathon went down in history as the most bizarre and wildly entertaining race. Luckily, but surprisingly, nobody died!
UNDERSTANDING YOUR COVERAGE WHAT DOES YOUR PROPERTY INSURANCE COVER?
So, what type of coverage is included in your plan? In most insurance policies, two types exist: one that only covers the items specifically laid out within your contract and another that is much broader. Generally speaking, coverage for specific, laid-out items tends to be more common because there is less liability for the insurance company and the coverage is more affordable for the home or property owner. However, even under the broader coverage plan, some items are still not commonly covered and require addendums.
•
Poor construction or workmanship (by contractors or builders)
• •
Normal wear and tear
Expensive items (typically anything over $2,500)
As a homeowner, or even as the owner of a brick- and-mortar business, you likely carry property insurance to protect you in the event your property is damaged or stolen during a burglary, theft, natural disaster, or accident. After all, repairs and replacements can be costly. However, it’s not just a simple document you sign and you’re covered. Loopholes, caveats, and exclusions complicate things a bit, and it’s important to make sure you understand your policy and what it does and does not cover. You never know when you may need to use it!
•
High-risk items (swingsets, swimming pools, trampolines)
•
Home business assets
Now that you are aware the above-listed items may require an addendum for proper coverage, it’s important to discuss this with your insurance agent before the time comes, and you need to rely on it. Keep in mind that if you do file a claim, the process can be tricky. Enlisting the assistance of an experienced property claims attorney will ensure your needs are met. We will fight for the coverage you deserve.
These additional coverage items usually include:
• • • • •
Flood damage
Mold
Pest/bug infestations
Earthquake/sinkhole damage
Nuclear accidents

7 of the Most Common Personal Injury Claims A Deep Dive Into Personal Injury Claims
Slip-and-Fall Accidents For a slip-and-fall claim to be valid, the fall must have occurred in a place (such as a grocery store) where you expect to be safe and free from tripping hazards, liquids, and other potentially dangerous conditions. A personal injury attorney must be able to prove the owner was negligent. Physical Assault If an individual is physically attacked by another person and they suffer an injury, a personal injury claim can help them obtain medical compensation for their pain as well as their medical treatment. Wrongful Death In the event that a death occurs due to the negligence of another person, the victim’s family can file a personal injury claim. Because these cases can be tricky, enlisting the assistance of a personal injury attorney is recommended. For any and all personal injury claims and information, contact The Whisler Law Firm today. We’ve got you covered.
Surely you’ve heard of a friend, relative, coworker, or neighbor who pursued a personal injury case. Unfortunately, it’s a routine legal matter because people often get unexpected injuries that may incur hefty medical bills, loss of ability to work, and pain and suffering.
in their hands. However, in the U.S. alone, roughly 65,000–200,000 people lose their lives each year because of medical accidents. Vehicular Accidents Auto accidents caused by buses, trains, cars, motorcycles, scooters, and boats are all types of personal injury claims. Even if a pedestrian is hit by an automobile, that counts! Animal Attacks Dog bites, or other injuries resulting from an animal attack, are potential personal injury claims. The laws surrounding animal bites vary from state to state, and it’s important to contact a personal injury attorney after an animal bite incident occurs. Workplace Injuries Surely, you’ve heard of workers’ compensation. In most cases, injured workers have the ability to file for compensation for medical treatment and missed wages if they are hurt on the job, whether it be from lifting heavy equipment, tripping over a computer wire, or falling down the stairs.
However, what is a personal injury claim?
You can make many claims that hold someone (either another individual or a business) responsible for your personal injuries. In the state of Florida, the injured party can demand that the party responsible will compensate the injured for their losses, and a successful personal injury case results in payment to the victim for damages and injuries.
Here are some of the most common personal injury claims.

Is Your Teen’s Self-Esteem Dropping?
WHAT TO KNOW AND HOW TO SPEND TIME ELSEWHERE Teenage Self-Esteem vs. Social Media
According to Mayo Clinic, nearly 97% of kids aged 13–17 years old use social media, whether it’s YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or another platform. Although these platforms come with major benefits — such as staying in touch with distant family and friends — it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your teen’s social media usage. Research shows that using social media more than three hours a day can increase risk of mental health problems, including anxiety and depression. Here’s why — or at least, a few expert theories. The Proven Risk Factors Social media affects everyone a little differently. For teens, thankfully, there are some studies about these differences. Beyond simply the number of hours spent on social media, there are other ways that researchers have noticed the negative impact of social media on teens. A 2016 study of more than 450 teens found that greater social media
use, nighttime social media use, and emotional investment in social media (such as feeling upset when prevented from logging on) were linked to worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and depression. It even matters how your teen is using social media. Is your teen interacting or only looking? A 2015 study found that social comparison and feedback seeking by teens using social media were linked to depressive symptoms. Additionally, a 2013 study showed that older adolescents who used social media passively, such as simply looking at pictures, reported declines in life satisfaction. In contrast, participants who used social media to interact with others and post their own content didn’t experience these declines. The Alternatives Instead of staring at a screen, encourage your teens to spend time face-to-face with their classmates and friends; that’s especially important for teens who are vulnerable to social anxiety.
Remind your teen that certain behaviors aren’t okay on social media: gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying, or damaging someone’s reputation (online or otherwise). Even if these activities can seem harmless at first, they are extremely damaging and hurtful to the people involved. Face-to-face contact is one of the most promising ways to deflect the negative aspects of social media. Don’t miss a chance to give your teen the one-on-one time that they may need.
