Little Threads o f Cartilage w W Wm hen microscopes and staining techniques had been devel oped to a sufficient degree of per fection, it was observed that prac tically all the cells of human beings, animals and plants contain certain very small structures in the form of granules, rods, or threads.

Furthermore, some other en zymes essential for other cellular processes are now known to be in side the chondriosomes and thus, besides supplying energy, they have a further part in controlling the ac tivity of the cell. The cells are the microscopic units of which the tissues of the body are composed. Typically a cell has one nucleus and the chondrio somes are in the area outside the nucleus. In cells which have a rela tively great energy requirement, they are arranged in the part of the cell where it appears there is the greatest utilization of energy. For example, in muscle cells they form a band around the part of the cell which contracts. They are abundant in the cells of the liver, heart, brain and kidneys. Without the benefit of scientific research the psalmist declared, “ I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” In contrast to this, the discovery of the marvels and intricacies of the human body do not necessarily bring men to a knowledge of the Creator. Some years ago a questionnaire sent to scientists in various fields of re search revealed that less than half of the scientists in each group be lieved in a God who can answer prayer. It is good to learn more and more about creation—to learn all we can about those things which enable us to be healthy and live longer. But it is better to know that which yields life eternal. However, these are not alternatives, and as we leam more about ourselves and the world in which we live, those who know the Lord marvel that the One who made it all was willing to offer Himself a vicarious sacrifice for our redemption. END.

These small objects are in motion and sometimes change from one shape to another. At first they were called by various names. Eventual ly the name mitochondria was ac cepted to designate them collective ly and the individual structures were called chondriosomes. The word mitochondria may be translated “ threads of cartilage” and the term chondriosome implies that they are small bodies of carti lage. Until very recently ideas about their function were mainly a matter of speculation. Photographs taken with the elec tron microscope however show in ternal structures and a double wall, the outer part of which is smooth and the inner usually wrinkled. It has been discovered that most of the energy used by cells is pro duced in the chondriosomes. They may be removed from the cells by crushing the tissue and swirling it rapidly in a centrifuge. Delicate chemical analyses then show that inside these minute bodies are local ized many of the enzymes which control the complex series of reac tions which starts with the digested food and produces energy in a form which the cell can use.
