the one we would use if we were serv ing a special guest. We might say that this glass is more honorable than the others because we would use it on more important occasions. Did you know that some people are more honorable than others? We read about such a one in 1 Chronicles 4:9, “And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren.” He was like this cut glass tumbler. The Scripture goes on to tell why he was more honorable than his brethren. He was a man who prayed. But before we look at his prayer, let’s remember one thing which made him different. “His mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow” (v. 9). His mother may have been a more godly mother because of her sorrow. She doubtless told him of her sorrow. Sorrows which we very much dislike can be valuable servants if we will let them. Some people have been sick in a hospital and during their sickness have accepted Christ as Saviour. Now let us look at Jabez’s prayer. “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me„ that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!” (1 Chro. 4:10.) He wanted God to bless him i n d e e d . He recognized the importance of God’s blessing. He asked that his coast be enlarged, which may have referred to increase of property. With the enlarging of his coast, he asked that the Lord’s hand might be with him and that he might be kept from evil. It would be well if people who are making a lot of money would pray this prayer. In some cases the increase of their money has caused them to drift away from God and all has not been well with them. He asked that he be kept from evil, that it might not grieve him. Many peo ple are grieved by the evil in their lives. God must have liked this prayer for we read, “And God granted him that which he requested.” This is a good prayer for each of us today and if we pray like this we will be differ ent too. END.

NEEDED — ■MORE WEDGES The missionary zeal of our workers is opening many doors for witnessing to Jews concern ing their Messiah Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is one thing to open these doors; it is another thing to keep them open. For this more full-time workers are needed to minister in the new fields. The gifts of the Lord’s people are the wedges that will keep these doors from closing.
