of speech, as 4f freedom of speech in cluded th e rig h t to demand pay from those who believe th e doctrine ta u g h t to be dangerous. A man has a rig h t to have smallpox if he w ants it, bu t lie does not have th e rig h t to communicate it to any .other person. ¿Society takes upon itself th e duty of preventing communication of diseases dangerous to th e body. By w hat rig h t can the professor claim pay for th e com munication of a disease dangerous to moral health? When th e evil influence of Darwin ism is understood it will be sent into oblivion, and these college combats, so fatal to students, however pleasant they may be to th e ir instructors, will be re membered as we recall th e bloody glad iato rial contests th a t took place in ancient arenas. at» at» KNOWNOTHINGISM Agnosticism is knownothingism. The agnostic says: “I don’t know.” Judge L. Q. C. Lamar of the United States Supreme Bench was traveling in Ohio. Ju st before him was a widely advertised agnostic talking like a perpetual motion, reeling off the odds and ends of infidelity w ritten by infidels during the past hun dred years. A group of men stood round listening. Judge Lamar reached over and touched the talker, introduced himself, and said: “I believe you are an agnos tic?” “Yes,” said the talker. “Well,” said the great judge, “You talk a great deal not to. know anything.” The talk ceased. a» ate SEEING AND SHOWING GOD When your burden is heaviest, you can always lighten a little some other burden. A t th e times when you cannot see God, th ere is still open to you this sacred possibility— to show God. Let th is though t, then, stay w ith you; there may be tim es when you cannot find help, bu t th ere is no tim e when you cannot give help.— George S. Merriam.

num ber of broad th ink ers have seen its appeal to th e m ulti tudes in th e present crisis in th e church and have been playing upon th e word. "F und am en tals” confer ences, w ith liberalists as th e speakers, have sprung up. Books and trac ts of th e most liberal type are now published under th e name “F undam en tals.” Re cently noticing th a t a book under th is title had been issued by th e Y. W. C. A. we procured a copy for exam ination. Prof. Robert S. Sm ith of Smith college is th e author. The open ing chapter had a good ring and encouraged us to rea d on. But sho rtly we began to be disappointed by some phrases slyly introduced, and as we read on we found these enlarged upon and brought fully into th e light. As a warning to any who will be a t trac ted by the title of th is book, we pass on a few of th e strik ing statem ents, which will be sufficient for any thorough Bible student. . As to H an P. 24. “T racing its (th e body’s) likeness to the lower forms of fish and p lan t life. . . How can one account for th e mysterious process? . . God is still as necessary as ever. Science, by establishing th e fact of method in th e realm of n atu re lays upon us th e necessity of believing in a God who conceived th e plan. . . W here did I get my sp irit? . . . Somewhere in the long process by which life was pro duced th ere entered in a mysterious ele m ent which we call the soul.” P. 35. “The F atherhood of God im plies th e brotherhood of man.”
