REVISED AND ENLARGED COURSES OF STUDY

H OR several years suggestions have corné from many q u art ers th a t ano ther year should be added to th e two year course of th e In stitu te, In order to provide advanced work for stud en ts who had finished the regu lar course. It has also been suggested th a t some p reparato ry work m ight be offered for studen ts who are h ardly pre pared to tak e up a t once th e courses now pursued. W ith both these ex trem es in m ind a comm ittee of th e F acu lty has been a t wor* on a new program which ds now presented, and which will go into operation w ith th e opening of th e F all Term September 19. The P re sen t Course Retained. We shall continue our present two- year course, only strengthening it at certain points, and shall add a th ird year’s work w ith a special diploma for those who ta k e th e th ird y ear course. The New T h ird Year. In th is additional work we plan to give a more thorough course in Church H istory, A good deal of th e work will consist of reading under th e direction of th e teachers. We shall give a course in Biblical criticism , not wasting overmuch tim e upon th e study of th e now thoroughly disproven and discredited Destructive Criticism of Graff, W ellhausen and th eir followers, and th e ir echoes in England and America, bu t showing th e abso lutely illogical character of th e ir m eth ods and th e absurdity of th e ir conclu sions, tak ing up th e positive argum ent for th e Mosaic authorship of th e Pen tateuch, and also tak ing up th e ques tion of th e authorship of th e books of Isaiah and Daniel and related subjects. There will be a course inr Prophecy: Messianic prophecy, General prophecy, Fulfilled prophecy and Unfulfilled prophecy. There will also be a course in Ad vanced English, i. e., literary and p lat form English. In th is course the studen ts will be train ed in expressing themselves in w riting and in speaking clearly, accurately, forcefully and a t tra c tiv e ly , bu t accuracy and force and fulness of expression will be emphasiz ed ra th e r th a n beauty of expression.
They will be shown how to acquire a large, varied and choice vocabulary and how to express themselves in telling phrases th a t fasten themselves in the memory, th e proper arrangem en t of words and clauses in a sentence to pro duce th e best effect. There will be additional work in Christian Evidences conducted by Rev. Dr. A. C. Dixon, Rev. Dr. R. A. Torrey and others who have given special a t ten tion to those lines of thought. There will also be work in th e G reek New Testam ent, not- in New Testam ent Greek. There will b e no attem p t to teach th e rudim ents of Greek, as we are firmly convinced th a t a sm attering of Greek is worse th a n no Greek a t all. But th ere will be a course in th e Greek New T estam ent and of those who are already more or less proficient in Greek, th e reading of whole books of the New T estam ent in Greek will be required. There will be a study of th e g reat words of th e Greek New Testament, and a study of th e pivotal chapters and of the g reat texts w ith a view to sermon izing. There will be advanced work in Hom iletics of a practical ch aracter in addi tion to th e work in Homiletics which is already being done. This will be un der th e leadership of Rev. Dr. Ralph A tkinson and supplemented by sugges tive lectures or classes by Rev. Dr. A. C. Dixon, Rev. Dr. Cortland Myers, Dr. R. A. Torrey and others. There will be thorough work in Pas to ral Theology, tak ing up all the phases of a m inister’s work, under th e direct charge of Rev. Dr. A tkinson and sup plemented by work by Rev. T. C-. Hor ton, Rev. Dr. A. C. Dixon, Rev. Dr. Cort land Myers, Rev. Dr. R . A. Torrey, all of whom have been pastors for many y ears and have had large experience in all phases of pastoral work. There will be much work done in th e reading of th e Scriptures. T h at is, it will be required of everyone to be able to read th e Scriptures to a congregation intelligently, interestingly and w ith force. _ There will also be work done in th e exposure of the vagaries of the so-called “New Theology” and th e so-called “So cial Gospel.”
