Publication was suspended sixty-six days later. In announcing th e suspension J. Clover Monsma, p resfdent of th e publishing company, stated, ac cording to press reports, th a t his paper had ‘tried to meet th e wishes of those people who profess to be dissatisfied w ith newspapers as they are .’ F ailu re was assigned to th e financial depression and to th e fact th a t ‘th e Christian lead ers and high-class business men of this town have failed us u tte rly .’ ” ' Some people have been very much distressed concerning Dr. Russell H. Conwell of Philadelphia whose little venture into Spiritism recently, ra th e r indicated th a t he was losing his balance. Dr. Cornwell, is over 78 years old and growing feeble a fte r 39 years as pastor of th e B aptist Temple. A very recent utteran ce a t a gathering of m inisters, is reassuring, and shows th a t afte r all, th e doctor has not cut all th e ropes of th e eternal anchor— “My work on earth will soon be done, b u t dying will be like going out of a hotel tow ard home. The bull, seeing little Johnnie’s red jacket, began to paw and bellow and come to ward them . Johnnie showed g reat signs of fear and began to hinder pro gress by pulling a t his m other’s dress. The mother said: “ Johnnie, ju st re-, member th a t your mother is a Chris tia n Science woman and th a t you are a little Christian Science man, th a t bull won’t h u rt us.” Johnnie said, very ex citedly: “Yes, mama, I know you’re Christian Science, and I know I ’m Christian Science, b u t I don’t believe th a t bull’s found it out yet.” Yes and th ere are several million bugs and body p arasites th a t are also uninform ed as to the real power of Christian Science, and th ey , keep night on furnishing Christian Science business to th e under takers. In an article by W. T. E llis in The Saturday Evening Post, th e question is asked, “Why do not th e churches set tle th ing s?” The W estern Recorder replies : , “They have - b e e n , settling things 'for some time, among other things they have settled is th e self- appointed leadership and self designat ed prophetic utterances of such men as W. T. E llis and. others. Mr. E llis de clares th a t ‘th e re never before was a g reater in te rest in religion in America th an today— or a smaller in terest in the churches.’ A study th ere m ight have proven to him th a t the w idespread fol lowing of German rationalism is th e tru e answer to the failure. We ask th e w riter, when he makes his next sight seeing trip fo r magazine purposes, to look over the theology of his churches and see w hether it is th e teaching of The Cross or th e jungle law of th e ‘survival of the fittest.’ ” It is quite evident th a t th e American people are no t in a sta te of m ind to ap p reciate a clean,, Christian daily news
