REDEMPTION To “ redeem.” means “ to buy back.” It also includes the thought of possess ing that which has been bought. The thought is of the slave markets, of which there were so many in our Lord’s time. Let us see what is implied in the thought of Christ being the Redeemer of the world. 1. Slaves were in bondage. Is this true of the unsaved man? (Rom. 7:14; Eph. 2 :2 ): “For we know that the law is spiritual i but I am carnal, sold under sin,” “Wherein in time past ye walked ac cording: to the course of this world, ac cording to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” 2. Slaves were under condemnation. Is this spiritually true of the natural man? (Jn. 3:18; Rom. 3:19; Gal. 3 :10): “He that believeth on him is not con demned; but he that believeth not is con demned already, because he hath not be lieved in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse, for it is written, Cursed is every one that contin- ueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.” 3. Slaves could be released only by some other person paying a redemption price. What provision has been made for- freeing men from the guilt of sin and condemnation for sin? (Gal. 3:13; 2 Cor. 5:21; Mt. 20:28; 1 Tim.. 2 :6 ): “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangcth on a tree.” “For he hath made him to be sin. for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to „minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” “ Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” Why was it absolutely necessary that

God should provide a Redeemer for man? (Ps. 49:7): “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.” Why could not man release himself from the power of sin? (Rom. 3:12; 5 :12 ): “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there' is none that doeth good, no, not one/’. «Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Could not the law of God redeem man without the sacrifice of the Son of God? (Heb. 10:1 ): “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacri fices which they oifered year by year con tinually make the comers thereunto per fect,” What, then, did God have to do in view of man's undone condition? (Ps- 111:9; 1 Cor. 1 :30): “He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant forever: holy and reverend is his name.” “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and re demption.” How was God’s redemption accom- plished? (Heb. 9:12; Eph. 1:7; Acts 20:28): “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once _into the holy place, having ob tained eternal redemption for us.” .. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, accord ing to the riches of his grace.” “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Will the acceptance of the Redeemer simply remove the penalty of sin or will it also have a practical effect in the life? (Titus 2 :14): “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” When the transaction of salvation is completed by our acceptance of the One
