THE K I NG ' S BUS I NESS and for everything else both in time and in eternity. Mr. Huang was con verted during one of my furloughs and soon after moved to the city of Heng- chow, so I never saw or even heard of him until quite recently. Every Sunday morning at 9:30 at the Liebenzeller Mission believers gather at the Lord’s table to partake of His sup per in remembrance of Him, and I reg ularly attend these services. One morn ing I was deeply impressed by a prayer offered by a man who sat back of me. After the service I asked Mr. Wohlleber who the man was, and he told me the story of his life and said that he and his family had quite recently moved back to Changsha and were now living near to the mission. ONE THING TO CLING TO “ I have taken much pains,” says the learned Selden, ‘‘to know everything that was esteemed worth knowing amongst men; but with all my disquisi tions and reading, nothing now remains with me to comfort me, at the close of life, but this passage of St. Paul, ‘It is a faithful saying and worthy of all ac ceptation, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.’ To this I cleave, and herein I find rest.” NURSING OUR CAKES Men will not avail themselves of the riches of God’s grace. They love to nurse their cares, and seem as uneasy without some fret, as an-old friar would be without his hair girdle. They are commanded to cast their cares upon the • Lord; but, even when they attempt it, they do not fail to catch them up again, and think it meritorious to walk bur dened. They take God’s ticket to heaven, and then put their baggage on their shoulders, and tramp, tramp the whole way there afoot.— Beecher.

Some leading advocates of the new theology in a great “ Institute on Christian Faith” which they have been holding at Co lumbus, Ohio, have so decided. A Columbus daily, reporting this “ in stitute” , carries scare headlines as fol lows: “Housecleaning is Needed if Christianity is to be Preserved— Future That Ends Before Great White Throne Sounds Like-Myth to Dr. B. D. Evans— Evolution is O. K.’ d— First Meeting Under Auspices of Theological Seven teen Gives Restatement of Faith.” From the newspapers we cull the fol lowing paragraphs: Preservation of Christianity demands a “ religious housecleaning,” Rev. Dr. B. Evans, pastor of Franklin Park M. E. Church, declared last night at the open ing session of the institute on “ Christian Faith for Men of Today,” held at First Congregational Church. Rev. Dr. Evans characterized as a “ fairy tale” the story of the Garden of Eden, and declared that the teaching of the Virgin birth of Christ has insuf ficient evidence to support it. He urged emphasis on essentials, God, Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God, and less attention to non-essen tials, which he termed as the Virgin- Birth theory, miracles, the Infallible book, forms and ceremonies. All three speakers at the meeting, Rev. Dr. Evans, Rev. Irving Maurer, and Professor Albert Avey, who read a paper prepared by Professor Joseph A. Leigh ton, expressed belief in the theory of evolution.
