| What They’re Saying | | ToYe Editors . | We’re Too Good to the Critics Kindly pardon us for having referred so often to the “ higher critics.” A subscriber has taken us to task for pay ing the critics such compliments, and we shall try to profit. The letter fol lows: \ “ Most every religious publication of the day has an article on some phase of what is known among the evangelicals as higher criticism. Why call them higher? Are they higher than those who hold the truth as revealed in the Scriptures? Have these men (as well as women) a superior standing? Have they gone farther in research than those of the orthodox class? Personally, I feel this is a hyperbolical title given to this class of so-called theologians. The proper title should be ‘lower’, if anything. The men who stand by the Bible as the infallible Word of God, are the men who are high in God’s sight. Furthermore, they are high in the sense that they have gone ‘beyond the sun’, with their faith and research; they have gone back to God through Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Why then apply the term higher to those who destroy faith in the Bible, faith in God, faith in Jesus Christ, faith in the Holy Spirit? Again, the term higher critic is a misleading one, as it conveys the impression to the youth of our land that in following one of these teachers they follow one of superior knowledge. This being false—why the term higher? Let us in the name of God cease to compliment these ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing’, and brand them as Destructive Critics in stead of higher critics.”
Dear Editors: Re your article, “ Where are the Per fect Men?” in K. B., May issue, 1922. Being somewhat interested in the sub ject on which you write, I thought I would like to advance a few thoughts endorsing what you have already said, and adding thereto. While on the one hand one does not wish to encourage Sinful Imperfection, on the other hand I am perfectly satis fied, after studying my Bible for over 40 years, that there is only one Person who has trodden the earth who could lay claim to Sinless Perfection, namely, Our Lord Jesus Christ. He was that “ Holy Thing that was born” (Lu. 1: 35). “ The Holy Child Jesus" (Acts 4:27, 30). “ In Him is no sin” (1 Jno. 3 :5). “ He knew no sin” (2 Cor. 5: 21), “ and no unrighteousness is in Him” (Jno. 7:18). The question I would raise is— “WHAT IS SIN?” This all important question must be answer ed by' the Holy Scriptures. “ The thought of foolishness is sin” (Prov. 24:9) “ Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Rom. 14:23). “ All unrighteousness is sin” (1 Jno. 5:17) and “ sin is lawless ness” (1 Jno. 3:4) (This reading is given by John Nelson Darby, author of the new translation of the N. T., as being more nearly correct than “ sin is the transgression of the law” as contained in the A. Version.) What Christian who knows himself would dare to say that he has lived a single day without a foolish thought passing through his mind? or that he has taken every step of that day in faith? or that he had transacted every bit of business strictly on the lines of righteousness as set forth in God’s Word? Some may say, “ Well, you are teaching truth for exercise.” Just so, but, these great truths bring to light the character of the God with whom we have to do. “ He is Righteous in
