T H E K I N G ’S B U S I N E S S ing true to historic faith. The north ern Baptist mission societies are report ing a deficit of $700,000. The deficit is doubtless largely due to the wide spread distrust which now prevails with regard to missionary teaching. Calamity! Who Brought It? What about the howl that is going up in some quarters to the effect that “ Fundamentalists” are trying to bring division and calamity on the churches? Calamity, it is true, may be in prospect for some churches, but we hold that when it falls it will have been the work of the men who turned away from the authority of the Word of God rr-not those who contended for the faith. There is no use trying to save the day with soft words. For instance, a pamphlet sent out, warns that “ de votion to Christ and His interests is of greater moment than orthodoxy.” But not too fas't! If the Devil could intro duce devotion to Christ at the expense of loyalty to His Word, he would do it, for then we should have neither. Fail ing in the attempt to ridicule orthodox preachers into line with the new theolo gy, the next step is to try to create an atmosphere of kindly tolerance around those who are spreading false doctrine. In other words, they would earnestly contend for those who have departed from the faith. Be not deceived! There will be no loyalty and devotion to Christ when the authority of the Bible is un dermined. The editor of Way of Faith states the matter well when he says: “ The liberal camp only ask to be let alone. If they might be free to do their work and distribute their leaven all would be quiet and sweet in Zion. They cannot understand why some of us are disturbing the peace of the church. Their special argument for silence has no doubt influenced scores of well meaning preachers and editors, who have been convinced that any in fluential protest is liable to start a riot.

856 init the churches of America to politi cal programs without even hearing the voice of the churches. A recent circu lar sent out announces that that body is taking steps for a warless world. The editor of The Presbyterian says, “Why not go further and say a sinless world? The world will never be warless until it is first- sinless. Christ is the only Power to take away the sin of the world and bring peace.’’ Suicides on the Increase The Save-a-Life League blames re action following the war for the large number of suicides in 1921. There were 20,000 in this country, including 76 millionaires, 86 physicians, 21 clergymen, 93 bankers, 7 mayors, and 10 editors, 858 children and 509 war veterans. Everybody Laugh! Hark! Hark! ‘Tis the voice of Ly man Abbott! Says he, “There has arisen within the last decade in the evangelical churches a new school of thinkers who call themselves Funda mentalists. They hold such doctrines as the virgin birth, the fall of man, the vicarious sacrifice of Christ.” Surely the doctor must be joking. He wouldn’t insult the intelligence of millions of church members by telling them those old doctrines were introduced by Funda mentalists in the last decade! It’s just his way of being humorous. Are the Laymen Waking Up? We notice an article by Caroline At water Mason in which she points out that out of 10,000 Baptist churches in the north 6,500 refuse to co-operate with the New World Movement. In other words, it would seem that two- thirds of the churches are standing for Baptist independence and principle. Perhaps the other third are dominated to an extent by modernists, but we be lieve the great majority of the laymen of all denominations are devoutly stand-
